I have found another tool that will backup your MS registration file. You have to install the software, save the configuration to a safe place and use this same utility to restore activation once installation is complete. The downside of all of this is that Win 10 will initially STILL install the HOME Version and you will have to upgrade.

A much better plan is to create & edit the ei.cfg file on your installation USB as outlined below, with the added bonus being that you don't have to do anything until disaster strikes and you need to reinstall:

More info here, although he does not rename file from .txt to .cfg

Pasting (Get-WmiObject -query 'select * from SoftwareLicensingService').OA3xOriginalProductKey and hitting Enter merely opens a new command prompt for me -- every time. And the waiting trick hasn't worked, unless you're speaking of more than half an hour.

Could not get this to work for me. Tried three Powershells listed on my i7 computer running Win 10. Just comes back to "PS C:\Users\Desk PC>"

The string didn't work in producing the 25 character product key...so is there an alternate way of doing this? I was windows 8 and loaded the free Windows 10 when it was available a few years back...
