I agree Windows 10 is a lot better than 8, but very disappointing in the simple things. Games, in particular, not everyone wants to be connected to the x-box store to play a quick game of solitaire. Not everyone wants to be connected to the cloud. I want my Windows 7 games on my computer and not connected to any thing.

If you are already running Windows 7, what is the purpose of uploading Windows 10 except for the fact that Microsoft will support our software
longer & maybe run a little faster? I would love it if they reverted back to XP. Now that would excite me. The more I read about Windows 10, there is no way I would download it.

Personalized or non-personalized ads - what's the difference? Ad blockers handle them both and I don't see either or them. Except on sites I choose to support, like this one.

Just upgraded, no choice.
Reasons: Hated Windows 8. Windows 10 was free.
Had to re-set a bunch of settings afterwards.
As usual, the same old reasons for MS to create new Windows is money. New Windows, stop supporting the old and people will spend & upgrade, thinking that they would get something better.
Redo the Icon pictures & change a few procedures and it is then considered new.
I still prefer XTREE Gold, but in a way.
Years ago if Apple had a good CAD program, I would have never used a MS PC.

I like the targeted add. Every week or so I spend a few minutes clicking on add I have no interest in and couldn't use if I wanted to. I then get the add for the next week or so. This is much less of a distraction than something I may have an interest in.

I'm still considering the pro's and con's of Windows 10 v. Windows 7. The privacy issues really concern me. I'm not on any social media, don't use WiFi, Skype, etc. The fact that Windows 10 is "pushing" these on users is, to me, a bit scary as well as annoying. Windows 7 is looking better and better as time goes by. However, "the jury is still out." A friend and his wife have tried Windows 10 only to go back to their Windows 8.1. Not everyone is singing the praises of Windows 10. I'm waiting for a couple or so months to see what happens and then will decide what to do.

I'm hesitating to download W10 soon because of the bug issues with the initial release of W8. Have you noticed any bugs?

I don't know about windows 8 but I use window 7 pro, and like it just fine.
I am now trying out windows 10, and so far haven't been as happy with this windows 10 as I thought I might, but I should have known, as microsoft has been showing all these signs since day 1.
Sure happy to see and read your article today.
Thank you

I downloaded this new program a couple of days ago and since then I have lost my pictures, my documents, and several programs that I use almost daily. Now I realize that Microsoft wants me use the programs that they support, but there are some that I just don't care for, so this makes the transition to "10" a little more difficult. I know all the folders I have "lost" are somewhere, it just takes a little while to figure out where they have been mover. Kind of frustrating, but the general program is likeable, albeit, difficult to master.

Hi Bob,
I've installed Windows 10 from Windows 8.
I can't work out how to enable non-Unicode programs. I have the "Hebrew" language pack installed, but I need non-Unicode for one of the programs I'm using in order to be able to use the Hebrew fonts. Can you help me?
Thanx,
Batya

Thank you for such relevant information.
I am still flogging Win10 interface into submission, so that it does things according to MY needs.
Sure, it would be nice to make use of Cortana but those who prefer to log-in with a 'local account' (not w/web-credentials) appear to be excluded from courting either Zira or Mark (Cortana voices?).
My only other issue with Win10 has been the way Microsoft has decided to deliver updates but this new method may be something we all have to get used to ("deferred" update delivery is not to my liking either).

I'm with several of the other commenters. I paid good money for computers with Windows 7 instead of Windows 8. I have a ton of application programs which I know run on Windows 7 and have no idea whether they'll work on Windows 10. I've yet to hear any substantial advantage Windows 10 has over Windows 7. (I could care less about Cortana. I don't want WUDO or Wifi sense. My computer is quite fast enough for my needs.) And I certainly don't want be an early adopter for a new operating system. So I intend to keep Windows 7 for just as long as possible. My biggest fear is that I'll make a mistake and accidentally accept the Windows 10 upgrade offer, and be screwed.

Well written article Bob. Thanks for the very good info re the privacy issues. I have been using the beta version of Windows 10 since last November and last week I did the upgrade to the version released on July 29th. On balance, Microsoft has made a lot of improvements in the OS...they have addressed most of the issues that were annoying/upsetting the Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 users. I like the improved speed and also the fact that they have radically improved navigation with this system. You can find things easily now on your computer and that is a major improvement over all previous operating systems.

Hi Bob,
Thanks for the helpful article. I've been quite happy with Win7 but decided to go with 10 as we will all have to sooner or later won't we? Win7 is great but it's now outdated software so for good or bad it's time to move on.
So far I have been a bit underwhelmed, it's quite easy to get the hang of, there are little things that are annoying (no point listing them - just annoying to me) but overall I feel I am up and running without any major issues.
It's help from people like you that make the difference, articles like this give me a bit more confidence to understand what's going on and feel more confident about controlling the software and not the other way around.
Thank's Bob, keep up the good work.

Hi Bob,
I have two laptops and installed Windows10 on both. It killed the HP running Win7 but works just fine on my Dell running Win8.1.
I don't like the fact that Windows tried to hijack my iTunes library on the HP so I changed the Open with to iTunes. I shut it down and now it won't start up, giving me a msg that says "The hard drive that Windows is installed on is locked" All I get now is all the AutoRepair programs and options on Win10 but none of them work.
I appreciate your helpful columns.

Thanks for a great article Bob.

The thing that I find interesting is that no one seems to have noticed this: “Microsoft collects data... You provide some of this data directly, such as when you ... upload a document to OneDrive, ..."

So, anything you save in their cloud is being scanned and analyzed even in an aspect you might expect to be private, i.e. your documents. People really should be aware of privacy issues when storing data.

Answer to David Wiener, you wil not be screwed, Microsoft give you 30 days to try Windows 10, if you do not like you can revert back to your old OS so no problem.
