Hi Bob, made the mistake of checking for updates the day 1809 was released. Wiped out all my videos and DVD's and think that was all. Restored my recent backup and all is good. Also my laptop and 2nd desktop have 1809 and no problems. Microsoft sure blew it on this one. Hope they learned a lesson.

Perhaps we should be calling this stage of QA testing 'gamma testing'. It's like beta testing but without the consent of those who know they're trying out possibly buggy software for the deliberate purpose of finding the bugs.

Any thoughts on using the WUMT (Windows Update Mini Tool)? Once it identifies what updates are available, one has to select a box to actually install such, or none, of the available offerings.

It's always good to discover reasons to hate BS,... er MS. I would really be upset to find out that I was simply prejudiced.

Like a fool I clicked on the check for updates and the result, totally trashed system. Absolutely nothing would work, no internet as I could not get a browser to work in any form, If I entered a url I got a continuous line of dots on my page. Had to roll back to 1803 by doing a complete re-install.Yes and all my docs were trashed as well. It is no wonder I stay with windows 7. This all happened on an older experimental computer.

I clicked on the button. Other than taking at least 6 hours to install (I left it running and went to bed only to have it needing me before three more hours of install) I have had nothing but warm fuzzies, but that's probably just the coffee and donuts.

Shame on Microsoft for pulling this stunt.

As a longtime Mac user, I can attest that Apple is not immune to this sort of behavior either.

Maybe Linux is the only real salvation?

Don't know if anything is connected but yesterday I lost the ability to connect to the web through Google but can still do it through IE. Thoughts??

Great! I clicked on 'Check for Updates' yesterday and downloaded an update titled 2018-09 (KB4100347). I assume that is the culprit so I uninstalled it, although it still shows as having been installed in the 'Updates' list but no longer in the list if I click on 'Uninstall Updates'.

I guess I was lucky. I have 6 Windows 10 computers, one running the Windows Insiders "Fast" version and the other 5 running the latest version of Windows 10. Early in October, I downloaded version 1809, placed the .iso on a usb flash drive, and successfully installed it on the five standard Win 10 machines. I had no problems and all 5 are now running build 17763.55. The only problem I am having at this minute is with my "Insider' machine, and that problem is easily overcome. The problem with the Edge Browser and the Extensions I wish to use with it. I have reported the problem to Microsoft, and hope that they are looking into a solution. The problem is overcome by using another (non-beta) browser.

I also have installed 1809 on other computers than my own and have had no problems. Of course, I always make sure I have a backup before the installation, but I have never had to use any of the backups with the installation of 1809.

I realize that Microsoft made a terrible error by prematurely releasing 1809, but my experience would indicate that most folks that did the installation had no problems and that the problems that were reported is probably a very small percentage of the installs that were made.

So I think that an installation of 1809 is generally safe, but that a backup prior to installation is a must. IF YOU INSTALL 1809, BACKUP FIRST.

I updated to 1809 by clicking on "Check for Updates" earlier this month. Didn't lose any data, but after a day or so, decided to go back to 1803. Some of the new "features" were acting strange on my laptop. After restoring from backup, went and setup up update to hold off any feature updates for 6 months. I use Windows 10 Pro on both my laptop and wife's PC and can do that. Windows 10 Home cannot. Now to see if Microsoft honors that setting.

I don't get it.
I "click the update" button all the time.
I never have any issues.
What am I doing wrong ?

Why not sue Microsoft? The W10 updates foisted on me by Microsoft have resulted in my spending numerous hours trying to find solutions to the problems they cause. A million users suing for 10 grand each adds up to a 10 billion dollar bill for Microsoft. Any lawyers listening?

And talking about bills - the billions salted away by Gates really represents the work that was NOT carried out by Microsoft over the years to fix the myriad Windows bugs...

There are 3 recommendations in this article to make PC run faster etc.
Are they safe? One of them is a Windows repair tool.

Last update knocked out my HP printer big time. I sorted it by directly attaching printer to my laptop (also HP, though it seemed unaffected) and going to HP printer support, installed all available updates (I had not actively updated it for 3 years after buying it). It worked fine after that. I wondered if microsoft had a grudge against HP. I hate Windows 10 btw, always problems, mainly wi fi connectivity after each up date.

sure glad I don't have windows 10 on any of my machines. wont ever use it,and when that is all there is I will scrap my machines and cancel the internet. That will save me money anyway. Thanks for a great report.Realy confirms my reason for not using that garbage.
