More luck than judgement, my laptop reports that it's running 1803. Phew! I think I hit the update button, but don't seem to have been moved to 1809.

I was hoping to get a fix for a problem where I'm unable to switch default programs. My .pdf files are assigned to MS Edge (ugh!) but right-click "Open With", "Choose another app" and ticking "always use this to open" didn't work, and "Settings/Apps/Default apps" didn't work whether I did defaults by app or file type...

A sort of solution in the end came from installing a pdf-reader I wouldn't have chosen and letting it write itself as default directly somewhere into HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT in the registry...

After over a couple of decades Redmond can't get it right, switching off support for anything half-way decent and replacing it with something worse...

Is this just me?

I have not experienced the reported problems but am rather put off by your adverts. I have a website and I realise that you have to earn something for the excellent effort you put into helping us. But scantily clad females and telling me how long my million will last me in retirement, I feel should be blocked (as I do). Perhaps an ad blocker would help ?

Two suggestions:

1)Keep your data such as photos and documents physically on a separate drive. That way updates or a crashed OS won't mess with your data.
2)Use a more stable and secure OS such as Ubuntu. Windows has a long history of update issues and loss of data. Ubuntu is efficient, secure, and much easier than Windows. Best of all, it is free.

It is with deep sorrow that I have to inform you all that Dell just sold its last remaining Windows 7 computer. It's all down hill from here on. May its memory be cherished as the last viable Windows OS.

I have a question how is this different then the windows check for updates function that windows does automatically? Does not windows auto check like every start up or every day or something? If so there would not be a way to avoid the so called pre-mature update.

I am on the insider fast track and have been running 1809 since it was first released. So far I have not had any problems with it. Of coarse I'm one of the strange people who keep image backups of my hard drive on a regular basis.

Thanks for the heads up Bob.
Good to know that the paranoid people are sometimes right to be. Even if their fear of Windows 10 is rather hilarious since it is far superior to Win 7 in every way. I often wonder if they are the same people who vote for politicians who promise to bring back the "good old days" meaning the pre-civil rights 50's.
It has been a long time since I had any computer problems attributable to MS.
I am exactly the person who might have clicked "check for updates." Usually at some point I will see an article about new features and decide to check them out.

It, unfortunately, installed overnight. Lost all emails, lost access to my Microsoft account and Outlook account, and have spent hours trying to rebuild a Windows 10 Pro system! Happily, I have an "old" Windows 7 Pro machine that I've resurrected for use during this disaster period. Windows 10 keeps asking me to call and get a number to reset my password: do so, that doesn't work either. Downloaded Mint 19 and may finally kiss Microsoft goodbye. Both my desktop and my laptop have received the "update" but lee damage to the laptop.

Watching Windows lambs being slaughtered from the comfort of Linux leaves one with sadistic guilt.

Re: " How anything like that got past the development and testing stages of an operating system used by hundreds of millions of people boggles the mind."

It doesn't boggle my mind. After Windows 10 bricked my computer three years ago, that's what I expect.

(I'm still using Windows 7, because its slimy Microsoft tendrils have wormed there way too deeply into my daily life. I feel like a victim of The Body Snatchers. But Linux beckons...)

So glad I still have Windows 7. Seriously, the damage that has been done to those of you whose PCs were subjected to that update need to hit Microsoft where it hurts - the money button. There was no excuse for what they did. Getting worse and worse as time goes by. From Windows 8 on, they have been a sinking ship.

Looking into Linux.

Re: Fred: "...I click the update button all the time. I never have any issues. What am I doing wrong ?"

You aren't doing anything wrong, but after reading this article, I'm thinking it's best NOT to use that button. Microsoft paused the rollout of the 1809 update because users were reporting issues, so the recommendation is/was to NOT click that button if you haven't already. If you view your update history, you should see either "Windows 10, version 1803" or 1809, I'm guessing. If you have version 1809 and aren't experiencing problems, that's great. If you still have 1803, I think you're safe, but again, I wouldn't click the update button without checking the Microsoft support website first.
(You can search within support dot microsoft dot com for "Windows 10 update history" and scroll down to "Known Issues.")

Every file that is on my hard drive is copied to both my external hard drives, each is a duplicate of my main PC hard drive.

Very special files, I also archive separately on thumb drives.

Each is scanned every so often, by my Norton 360 & Malware-bytes as well.

And if I were to have a problem with "10 1809" or a virus or some other cretin on my main PC; until it is cleaned or fixed, I utilize one of my other back-up PCs; in order not to affect my backup files.

Ever since MS DOS 6.22, I have lost trust in all software, take many precautions, once deleted, it is gone!

And exactly why didn't Microsoft send a blanket email to all about this screw up?

I totally agree with Hubert's post, lets sue Microsoft. My $1,000.00 plus Dell All-In-One desk top purchased in May, 2018 is a piece of S#@T since installing this up date. Dell printer works some time, Blue Tooth Software DOES NOT WORK. After contacting Dell, INDIA 3 times was told oh well they do not warranty soft ware and I must have installed the Microsoft up date wrong.

The public needs to start taking a stand against Microsoft for having to deal with crap like this. Yes Hubert is there an attorney out there that would like to rake on a class action suit against Microsoft???

Great information! Also I appreciate most of the other comments. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of backing everything up. Yes! I agree that what Microsoft did was utterly scandalous. Even though I have been using Windows 10, I have also been using Linux. Thank you!

I've been clicking the manual update button every week for the past 7 months, and yes many failed installs of patches. I thought I was being organised and prudent. Damn. Suppose I got lucky with the "version 1809". I never run Beta versions as a rule.

I have a Gateway laptop that I upgraded to win10 from 8.1. I only use it occasionally, and punched the check for updates button the first day 1809 was available. I started at midnight, and when I got up at 8AM, it was still updating. It finished, restarted, and everything looked ok. I didn't have anything important on it (plus had a backup image), so I don't think I lost anything. Over the weekend, without prompting, there was an update for 1809 that installed. Everything still ok. I was just lucky?
