Your article states "If you don't need to modify the video at all...this method is the easiest and the most direct." What if you do need to edit the video, what's the easiest for that purpose? Thank you! EDITOR'S NOTE: If you need to edit the video, then you'll have to save it on your computer, and use a movie editing program such as Windows MovieMaker, or iMovie. |

I'm having problems! I have a Sylvania VHS/DVD combo. I have some VHS tapes (Disney & some others) that I want to dub to DVD from VHS. Is there ANY way I can do this or am I just S.O.L.? I am getting a message that it can't be done when I try to do it - copy protected. What can I do?? Thanks so much!!! BTW, I have read through most of the comments and it just makes my head spin trying to make sense of what they mean! ha ha. EDITOR'S NOTE: Sorry if this sounds mean, but you will have to try and wrap your head around a few new concepts if you want to solve your problem. Some have reported success doing this. I've mentioned the Sima CT-200 stabilizer a few times. Try Videohelp.com for more assistance if that device doesn't work for you. |

Very useful site. I have tried one conversion programme which failed as sound/vision did not match. That was VHS to laptop. Extremely complicated procedure via internet. Wanted to hurl laptop through window! Can I use this if I buy a separate DVD recorder? Have too many old tapes to pay a company. Rose |

I converted 350 VHS tapes to DVD using a Facet Vidio Clarifier. It goes between the vidio link from the VHS player and the DVD recorder and removes the incription while stabilizing the image. If the tape is really bad it will not fix everything. I tried to find the website with no luck. The cons were: real time recording, no way to fast track. Heads need to be kept clean on both recorder and player every 8-10 hours. |

When converting from analog to DVD, readers should also know that can be a BIG format issue. I have transferred dozens of hi-8 and VHS tapes to DVD using a machine called the Panasonic DMR-e50. I then transferred those videos to the hard drive of my computer and tried to view them with Windows Media Player, and edit them with Windows Movie Maker. It does not work. I'm told its because the videos are in a .VOB format which are not compatible with WMP and WMM! I now have to convert them to a compatible format (.AVI, I'm told). So here I go again up a learning curve.... |

I was happily using Sony Giga Pocket to (a) record digital TV (from a set=top box),and to copy VHS tapes to DVD, both with excellent results.Sound and Video were first class. Somewhere along the line, my Giga Pocket sofware failed, and despite having a Sony back-up for this, still doesn't work at all. I an trying other software, and whilst I can SEE the video, I cannot get any sound. If I could solve the AUDIO problem, I would have everything I need. |

Another black box option that I didn't see mentioned in the article or comments is an analog-to-digital converter (with software) from Honestech - VHS to DVD Deluxe. The Plus version doesn't include Blu-ray support. Here's a positive review of VHS to DVD 3.0 Deluxe. Cheers! |

My DVD/VCR player/recorder combo does not record VHS to DVD. It does just the opposite. I'm really kind of surprised. You would think that it would record the older media to the newer media (VHS to DVD) but it doesn't - at least, there are no instructions for that . . . only instructions to copy a DVD disk to a VHS tape. |

I have a Samsung VHS/DVD combo unit, model DVD-V5500. I am trying to transfer VHS tapes to DVD's, but can't seem to make it work. I tried to just press REC, but that seemed to copy a blank DVD onto my tape which results in erasing my tape. What am I doing wrong??? |

I recently purchased a Samsung DVD-VCR recorder (VR375A) for purposes of dubbing all my old VHS tapes of many theatrical performances to DVD for purposes of editing snippets of them into a demo reel. The recorder is working fine, and making DVD's. Only problem is that they are completely unreadable by my Mac (do not even show up on the desktop - it's like they don't even exist), so I don't even have a software option to reformat them to make them usable. I called Samsung and they admitted they've had complaints and no fix for this problem. They suggested I use a PC to change the disc's formats (thereby investing in twice as many discs and twice as much time). Since I have hundreds of VHS tapes, this is not practical. Before I return the Samsung, I want to know if anyone can suggest a brand that actually makes discs that are readable by Mac's. I called JVC, and they had no idea even of what I was talking about (thinking there was something wrong with the type of disc I was using, which there wasn't - I know Mac's like "minus R" discs), so I'm thinking real users, as opposed to manufacturers, will know better! I prefer not to do this transferring to DVD directly onto my computer, as I'm busy using it for other work, and wanted to accomplish this separately...plus, I don't have the storage for this many tapes' worth of info, except if I make separate DVD's. Thanks for any help or links anyone can provide! I had no idea this could be so crazily complicated! |
