I downloaded and ran the (free) GWX Control Panel from UltimateOutsider and haven't been bothered since.

Yep, I got one of those yesterday telling me that I'd have W10 on Thursday unless I did something about it - which I did!

I use https://www.grc.com/never10.htm and http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/ to avoid Windows 10.

I volunteer at my local VFW and an invite to install Windows 10 popped up a few months ago on the computer I use there. There was a button marked "Install Later", so I clicked it. The install began immediately, rendering the PC useless for the next several hours.

It is my computer, not Microsofts'. Why don't they understand that. Really, is it legal? Have we all somewhere acknowledged MS can control our computers at will, not us.

Really, time to go back to Linux and see how it has fared since I last looked, and that's been at least 15 years. Anyone else taking a serious look at Linux.

I guess MS really is a motivator.

I use the GWX Control Panel too and have had no problems yet. Hope it remains that way until I want to install Win 10.

I've spent many hours and clients money to remove and hide the nags, only to have them return, in most cases. I give up. To resist is futile.

I, like Rick, have installed NEVER 10 and have avoided the nagging.

Yesterday I got the notice Win 10 would be installed on Thursday. They have been harassing me incessantly. There was no cancel reply to click.Looking for the cancel button I had to click through several pages selling the Win 10 features, forcing me to look and integrate their message This is beyond arrogance, this is authoritarianism. they're controlling ME? I keep a file of your posts. If I don't find your post abt this I will be switching to Ubuntu. Will I still have gmail with that OS? I heard there are some interface problems with Open Source.

Thank you for your counsel

Keep in mind that just clicking on the 'Cancel' button will only cancel the pop-up message, not the installation. The installation will still happen on the given date and time.

Help! I am totally confused and I can't be the only one. In your article Get Windows 10 Now you have a box on the left that says Windows 10 will not be forced on me. Today's article seems to say something different and I don't want Windows 10 at all!

I run Win 7 on this computer and want to keep it. I run XP on my 2nd computer and my laptop because I have an old Adobe Photoshop 7 on it and I want to continue to use it.

How can I avoid Microsoft downloading Windows 10 to all or any of my computers? Please direct me to the instructions if you have them. Thank you!

EDITOR'S NOTE: Please read the article again. I gave a link to those instructions.

Every time I get one of their pop ups I just click the X in the top right corner to close the panel. Seems to have worked for me, although the messages are coming even more frequently now. I want to install Windows 10 - but - until I see it is easy, reliable and supports all my current capability to watch videos, play all my DVD , etc I will not do it. I have heard so many (bad and good) stories - I just remain sceptical

I was originally told by Microsoft that my Windows 7 was compatible to change. I tried to upgrade and got a message that Nvidia graphics were not compatible. I am now happy that it is uncompatible and I have not been bugged by them since.

This is the first time ever asking any questions and I hope I spelled my words correctly, My question is if I have GWX control panel watching for Windows 10, will I still wake up to Windows 10 one day? I have Windows 8.1 . GOD bless you and have a great day!

Although nobody ever reads them, I think the EULA that we click "accept" at the initial startup of a new PC gives Microsoft a lot of legal power. The way I understand it (even if I'm not a lawyer by any strech of the imagination) is that, yes we own the computer, but in essence, we're sort of renting Windows, hence the "license" part. In other words, they can--and do!--kick us out of our own machines. You do have a couple of options, like trying to be educated about it (thanks to Bob for that!), staying on top of it, or bow to Microsoft's will and accept Windows 10, and a third one would be to go rogue and embrace the Linux camp. A possible fourth option is fork a lot of money and go with Apple...;-). Anyhow. It'll be interesting to watch how things develop with the merging of cars and computer technologies too, as in, does the owner of a Tesla have to "accept" the EULA before using the car? How about updates? If you don't want the new Car OS, does it become a pile of undriveable junk? Mmmmmh. Dunno.

Re: "...you may soon wake up in the morning to find Windows 10 has taken its place..."
Or that Windows 10 has bricked your computer, as it did mine.

Is there any legal recourse to stop Microsoft from installing Win10 without our consent?

To Marc Menard (17 May 2016):
There is much vitriol and wrangling over the EULA at

I got the message Windows 10 was going to be installed and I hit the cancel and it has stopped for now. I'm sure they will continue trying. I don't like being forced. If and when I install, I want a printed guide with detailed instructions and don't want to mess up my computer which is working fine and familiar.

Hey, Hey, Hey! What's this all about.....can Bob or someone answer?

I clicked on the Windows 10 reminder in the taskbar and read the following at the bottom of reminder.........

"Yes, free! Full version of Windows 10, not a trial. 3GB + download, internet access fees may apply."

What's that all about?

Thank you.
