TrueCrypt 6.0 was just released. Maybe your user should look into that. Seems a lot safer that bio.

A question about hard drive security... Can any computer read any hard drive ? I bought a new computer and my original hard drive couldn't be read in the new computer. NOW that's security !

EDITOR'S NOTE: You should be able to remove a hard drive from one computer, install it as a second drive in another computer, and access everything on it. What specific problem did you have?

The most common cause of this is Norton security software. More specifically, the GoBack component, which is a handy tool bundled with most Norton/ Symantec products, and can be left behind when they are uninstalled. To access the data on the new drive (without booting from it), you will have to re-install Norton Go-Back. If it was your boot drive on the old computer, just unplug the new primary drive, and let the new computer boot from the old drive. You will get tons of error massages about drivers and whatnot, and Microsoft warning about a limited number of boots before you have to re-licence the installed version of windows to the new machine. You can ignore these, and if necessary, boot it to safe-mode. This works in all cases I've seen with Win95 through Win XP.

Once you are booted up from the old drive, you just have to get to the Add/Remove Programs screen and un-install Norton Go-Back and anything else you can find with 'Norton' or 'Symantec' in the name, then shut down and hook your new primary drive back up, and reboot. You should now be able to access the data on the old drive.

Can you use the builtin Windows encryption to encrypt directories on a hard drive? If so, what are the pros/cons?

EDITOR'S NOTE: What encryption do you mean? The compressed file password thingie?

i have an astone external hard drive which has started making a clicking sound & wont fire up.. anything i can do?

EDITOR'S NOTE: As a last resort, put it in the freezer for a few hours, then try it again. Not sure how long to let it "thaw" but others have reported success with this method when an internal drive was failing. If the drive does revive, backup all your data, and replace the drive.

Can you suggest a program or two that will give me data encryption for a 60Gb external SSD drive?

I am looking for something which sits on the SSD external drive meaning I can plug it into any PC and I wont have to install anything but it will automatically ask me for a password if I want access to it.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Try something like PGP or TrueCrypt.

I´m using discryptor.net software. I think that really makes my data secure.

ioSafe external HDDs are more secure than most: they're waterproof, fireproof, can be bolted to the floor and (in the case of certain models) are crushproof.

Hello, i love your site above all else. I have Excelstor 80GB IDE hard drive which I used as my secondary drive to my SATA primary hard drive and it work fine for almost a year except those times that some partition of that IDE drive cannot be seen on MY COMPUTER but still work upon restart, until one day my IDE drive totally hid and cannot be accessed but seen on DISK MANAGEMENT.

I have a lot of files save on it so formatting is not my choice. I tried to slave on other computer but it act as primary and my other drive can't be seen on cmos. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

EDITOR'S NOTE: I'd suggest connecting it as an external drive via USB.
