Hide Myspace Friends?

Category: Myspace , Myspace2

"I added some code for hiding my friends list on Myspace, but my ex-friend somehow got the whole list and sent it to me as proof. How did she do this? Isn't that a security problem on Myspace?"

Hiding Your Myspace Friends List?

hiding myspace friends NEWS FLASH! A "hidden" friends list is not really hidden. If you view the source of the page, everything you thought was hidden is right there in the HTML code for your page. Try it... right-click on any Myspace profile page, select the View Source option, and it will open in a new text window.

It may take a bit of poking around in what looks like a jumble of computerese, but all the friends and links to their profiles are there. You can get to the right spot by doing a search in the code for "Friend Space".

If you paste the HTML/CSS code as shown below in the About Me section of your profile, you can turn off the display of the Friends list on the profile page. That makes it invisible to humans viewing the page with a web browser, but it doesn't actually remove anything from the page.

<style type="text/css">
td.text td.text table table table,
td.text td.text table br,
td.text td.text table .orangetext15,
td.text td.text .redlink,
td.text td.text span.btext {display:none;}
td.text td.text table {background-color:transparent;}
td.text td.text table td,
td.text td.text table {height:0;padding:0;border:0;}
td.text td.text table table td {padding:3;}
td.text td.text table table br {display:inline;}
</style>

The "hide friends list" hack demonstrated above is not sanctioned by Myspace, and there's no guarantee it will work next week, next month or next year. If Myspace changes the structure or layout of the HTML code in user profiles, it could stop working, or even make something else invisible. So this is not a Myspace security issue. It would be nice if Myspace provided an option in the profile editor to hide or show the Friends list, but until that happens you'll have to use an unofficial hack like the one above, and live with a partial solution.

This underscores another point that I think many Myspace users don't quite understand. Your Myspace page is a public forum which can be viewed by anyone in the world, unless you make the profile private. It's not a place for one-to-one personal communication. And even if your page is private, the comments you post on other profiles may be public. If you have something personal to say, and you don't want it published for the whole world to see, use email or instant messaging instead.

One way to get to comments and friend lists that have been hidden is changing the section of the URL that says viewprofile to viewfriends or viewcomments.
I contacted Myspace about making a feature that will actually allow you to make friends lists and comments private, but so far they don't seem to give a crap what anyone thinks.

The easiest way to see someone's hidden friends is to view someone else's friends, and change the friend id number to the desired person's friend id.

I have someone on myspace that won leave me alone. Can I hide my page to make it look like I have closed it to people who are not on my friends list. Myspace wont help me.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Have you made your page private? That should prevent non-friends from posting on your page.

If you are looking at someones page in the middle of the url adress it says viewprofile. Change it to viewfriends.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Yes, this will show you the list of friends, but it will not work for private profiles.
