Got both the usb and dvd 64 bit. USB was no problem, thought it took some time. Take a pee, put on the coffee pot, and follow the bouncing ball. Didn't try the dvd disc, yet. Boot could be a tad faster, but once up and running, the speeds are just great. Email is fine. I think Microsoft has it right, this time. Edge browser is fine. No need to click back to the future to win 8.1 or 7, thought both are possible. Hang with 10, you won't regret it. There will be updates, for sure, but 10 is a real 10.

THANKS BOB!!! I thought maybe I'd have to wait months for Win10, but I did what you said and I'm typing this on a Win10 machine! It is great so far. My old desktop came up just as before (with files and links and background), and nothing seems to be amiss. Everything I've tested so far works as expected. I am as happy as a pig in mud. OK, maybe a bad metaphor, but I'm Happy! :)

Bob,

You made a mountain out of a mole hill. I updated all three of my computers to Windows 10 without a hitch. No problems with drivers, updates, activation codes, etc. It's been the easiest installation/upgrade all the way back to Win 95. (Remember the multiple 3.5 inch disks?). You were being too cautious. MS made it for dummies, not experts like you.

Bob,
Whenever Windows Update tries to "upgrade to Windows 10 Home," I get the error code 80240020. Windows Update tries every day to do the upgrade, and I always get the error code.
I have since downloaded the media creation tool, so I will try the download that way.
Thanks much for all the little details in your article, especially about that product code number. It would have freaked me out.

Appreciate the info you provided but I can't do anything because my broadband is much too slow to download Win 10. All this is irrelevant until MS comes up with a hard copy.

One question I haven't found an answer for even after digging through the Microsoft FAQs is what about something like the Windows 7 Starter version on my netbook. I would assume that packages like Windows 7 pro or home editions would be fine, but nothing is mentioned about the starter editions. Anyone have any info?

Thx

Upgraded through the offered update, just like any other update. Don't recall any “media creation tool” being offered through this process hence no .ISO file or burning.
All went well EXCEPT lost Internet connection (drivers I suspect). Tech shop is working on it otherwise 10 appears to boot and close much quicker. Still have to find some of the controls but the initial felling is that the transition will not be to painful.

Always great to read your newsletters. Have you managed to discover how much Mr. Gates & Co. plans to soak us all for once the majority have moved to Windows 10? I doubt very much it'll be cheap! After all, how can Bill make ends meet with only 80 billion in the bank!?

I have used the media creation tool and tried to install on my Win 8.1 ASUS laptop. I was able to complete the download. However, at about 24% installation stops with the unhelpful message. "Something Happened, Windows 10 Installation Failed" I have received lots of stupid messages from software, but "Something Happened" is possibly the worst.

Hi Bob!

After installing Win 10 and after several hours of trying, I could'nt use Google Chrome "can't connect to internet" the message said but I could use IE to surf the internet at will!!! I also had major problems with my VPN (HMA) and my Radeon card (Toshiba Satellite 2014) and AVG antivirus.

I reverted to Win 8,1 and everything works fine! Win 10 will wait for me until these annoying bugs are fixed.

Voilà!

My son installed Windows 10 yesterday on my Windows 7 PC and it looks as if all my files and programmes are okay. The only thing I can't seem to change at the moment is where it downloads my files to - can't seem to find the Setting where you tell the new browser to download where you want it to but otherwise all seems to be okay. I am going to wait before we do the Laptop though. Bob, do you have a way of downloading where you want it to go with the new Browser that comes with Windows 10? I guess I could go back to Firefox. After waiting for the download and install, It wouldn't connect to the internet through my Cable Modem! I had to go back to Win 7 for a while until they get that fixed!
Also there are some problems with the video drivers on the NVidia cards! My display wasn't clear at all!

Um, Bob. I have a new computer (laptop) I bought on 1/6/20215 and it runs Windows 8.1, I am having trouble making it work ANYTHING like Vista Home Basic no probs. there) sooooooooooo, how will I go with Windows 10????????????????????? I just thought I'd ask. (Iknow, I'm just dumb)

EDITOR'S NOTE: Not a dumb question. If you are familiar with Vista or Windows 7, you will find Windows 10 much less of a shock (and much more familiar) than Windows 8.

Had to laugh when I read your description of your "vintage" system. I have a 2011 Dell XPS laptop with very similar specs to the one you described, except with core i7, and I still consider it brand new! My Dell AIO Inkjet printer is even older than my laptop. I think I bought it bundled with an ancient desktop computer about 10 years ago. My upgrade from Win7 Home Premium to Windows 10 went flawlessly, with one exception. No matter what I did, my printer wouldn't work. Dell apparently doesn't plan to update the driver for Windows 10 for this printer, and I don't want to buy a new printer right now, so I have gone back to Win7 in the meantime. Also, as others have commented, I lost Windows Media during the upgrade as well, but I don't use that much so it was no great loss for me.

Hey Bob,
I downloaded and installed Windows 10, from Windows 7 on an older Dell Inspiron. It was easy and little to know effort on my part. Using Windows ten, has also been painless, thanks to some great counseling.

I really like Windows. Upgrade was flawless. My only problem: When I click on the calendar, I cannot just slide the mouse up to the calendar. Calendar disappears too quickly. Any ideas what to do.
Thanks

Windows 10 installed flawlessly on my system and I've been quite happy with it. I do however have one problem. I have 5.1 surround speakers. After the switch my speaker settings seem to have reverted to default and I can find no way to adjust them! Any advise?
Thanks Bob.

Being something of a minimalist, I want nothing on my desktop but my own photography and one file that holds all shortcuts. Will I be able to clear the desktop of the clutter, and have a more prestine desktop? (And yes, the desktop upon which my laptop sits is also free of clutter.) Currently using Windows 7.
