Bob,
I use the FlashStopper Add-on in Firefox to stop all Flash except where I need it. For the cases where I absolutely need it, I add it to the "whitelist" in FlashStopper. Do you believe this is unsafe?

Without flash I am unable to vie any Videos. IE, MS Edge, Chrome, Firefox, all update Flash the first time you open the Browser. What do you suggest we use in place of Flash?

I have to enable flash to read my eNewspaper. When I close that tab in FFox, is flash then disabled again? Or does it continue in the background until I shut down at night? Or if I just close FFox?

Your warning came 7 days too late. My wife's computer was attacked with ransomeware (Cryptolocker) and will have to be formatted as it is unrecoverable. Even the backups are a mess. I checked into it and it was part of the bedep thing exploiting a hole in Flash.

Her antivirus and malware protection was uptodate. In fact, I ran a couple web-based malware software detectors on the machine (McAfee and Norton) who pronounced the machine "clean" even as it was being locked up for good.

*sigh*

In Firefox it's "Tools" then "Add-ons" one should start with, not not "Settings" one should start with, not "Settings, then Addons" as suggested in the article.

So after n years, Apple's decision to release the iPad with a broken browser is vindicated. But your misplaced apostrophe (it's replacement) isn't

I use Firefox and Pale Moon as my browsers, and I find that if I set the Flash plug-in to "Ask to activate" then most videos including anything on YouTube default to Flash. If I set the plug-in to "Never activate" then I seldom have any video that won't use HTML5 automatically.

Sad Guy,

I received the FBI Green Dot Money Pak a few years back. I almost fell for the trap, but after checking, I decided to try this:
1. SHUT DOWN COMPUTER.
2. RESTART COMPUTER TAPING F8 KEY TO START SAFE
MODE.
3. SAFE MODE SCREEN, TAP ENTER BUTTON.
4. WINDOWS HELP & SUPPORT, TAP START BUTTON, TAP
CONTROL PANEL BUTTON, TAP RECOVER BUTTON, TAP
OPEN SYSTEM RESTORE BUTTON, TAP NEXT, CHOOSE
DATE YOU WANT TO SET YOUR COMPUTER BACK TO,
TAP NEXT, YOUR COMPUTER WILL BE SET BACK TO
THE DATE YOU CHOSE.

Dear Bob,

Please dont run for the hemlock after Mr. Skeats' acerbic grammer lessen. Im sure he didnt intend for hi's comment to hurt your feelings. Geez, one mistake in thousands of articles!I should be so lucky.

No. I shall not get rid of Flash (nor Java). If you can give me a viable alternative, then I might lend you an ear. Instead, you are doing what most experts are doing, that is; saying that Flash must be uninstalled, without any sensible solution. Stating "if you possibly can", is not a solution and the Brian Krebb argument is equally useless for the average user. I have 4 computers running XP, Flash and Java. Never had a malware problem on any of them for the past 4 years, despite all the scare mongering. What I do experience, are Microsoft related problems, such as corrupted dotNET nonsense. If I listen to the pedantic advice from experts, I would have to spend the equivalent of $10,000 (at current exchange rate) on hardware and software upgrades in one sitting to replace things which are still in 100% working condition and fulfilling all my needs.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Your argument is the same as saying "I never got the flu shot, and look, no influenza here!" I think you realize that in both cases, it's a calculated risk, and a choice based on your lifestyle and environment.

I tried ditching Flash before and it got reloaded when I needed it for a video. Worst crap was it also loaded Chrome which I despise for how it seem to interfere with Firefox and has a lousy feel and look.

Wouldn't disabling it be adequate?

I read articles about getting rid of flash a couple of times a year and I try life without it and within an hour there are at least 3 or 4 different things I try to do that won't work without it! Who are these people who say you can uninstall it and not miss it?

EA GAMES [POGO.COM] to be exact loves Flash Player, I do not because they use ultra long scripts which freeze games. Why don't they have the truth about the out of date Flash program??

EDITOR'S NOTE: Because then they'd go out of business.

Bob, I hope that this is not a dumb question. Is Adobe Flash the same as Adobe Flash Player?

EDITOR'S NOTE: Not really, Flash is a development (coding) language. Flash Player is needed to run the Flash code.

What?!? now I have no Bejewelled Blitz?!? No other facebook games, looks like they all want Adobe Flash. Sorry Bob, but you gave me bad advice this time. Oh- and Rick? You did not ask a dumb question, but you should not have asked it seven times.

I got rid of flash last summer. A few things don't work; the only one that really bothers me is Ch 41 TV in Kansas city. If they won't update their site then I don't need to look at their ads, though I do miss their weather videos.

I need Adobe Flash every day for playing various PCH games, seeing some videos, etc. It keeps getting eliminated when I use AOL, and I have to keep reinstalling it. I thought it was Avast that was removing it every few days. If I use Google, I can play the PCH games I need, but it's a pain to not be using AOL, since I use that for everything. I'm hoping they finally figure out a way to protect Flash from the bad guys because I need it.
