I have never liked Norton but have had excellent experience with Trend Micro and their PC-cillin. I have found them to have the signature for new viruses before most others. I like paid vs free such as AVG because their updates are much more timely.

Microsoft Security Essentials does a great good of protecting my Win 7 machine and its easy on resources. It also does offer real time protection and spyware which a lot of the free antivirus programs do not.

McAfee seems better than Norton. I use ESET at home. Norton has been impossibly slow in the past, and in some years has been too difficult to uninstall. No single program is best.

In my firm I use Eset NOD32 which is by my opinion excelent. At home I use free MS SecurityEssentials. But in some cases when NOD32 detect potentially unsafe/unwanted application the SecurityEssentials detect nothing.
One year ago I used NIS2010 but it slow Windows startup and was not quite user friendly for me.

I have, over the years, used almost all of them, and I have settled on Trend Micro.

One A/V that hasn't been mentioned that probably outperforms all of those you've mentioned is Sunbelt Security's VIPRE Premium. You can get a 30 day free trial that is fully operational from day one, uses less resources than all these other programs ever thought of, and their customer service is the best and I mean the BEST you'll ever get from any vendor and if somehow a problem does arise from using their program they will help you get rid of the problem FREE OF CHARGE and it won't take 5 days of steady phone calls to contact them! I've been using them for 3 years and have NOT had any viruses, Trojans or anything else ever get through! They man the customer service lines 24/7 and are really customer-friendly.

I'd look at Sunbelt Software's Vipre. I have had good results. It isn't a resource hog and it is fast. http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/

I use Microsoft Security Essentials and like it a lot. On Bob's advice posted on his site, I also use Advance Care and MalwareBites. My daughter had previously used Malwarebites to resolve problems. It's a few extra steps every now and then but security of speed are both enhanced. Thanks Bob.

I use Super Antispyware along with MS Security Essentials: I run RegRun REANIMATOR Unhack-Me at startup. All three keep my PC safe and clean! Mike

Hello All - -

In my humble opinion, you can have FREE and still come out on top. For example, I use MSE and Panda Cloud in my computer (plus Malwarebytes and SpyBot Search & destroy)

These four systems work beautifully together and have for some time now - - what one doesn't catch the others will.
[By the way, to see if your computer's anti-virus product is active go to www.eicar.org and do a Anti-Malware Testfile test. It's easy.]

Thanks for listening,

I had Kaspersky and I think it is very feature filled but my XP SP3 machine is 9 years old (2 GHz Pentium 4) and it was being choked to death (30 seconds before a request to copy a file from one place to another would even start!). Tried MSE - also slowed down the computer but not as badly. Still looking for a replacement that works but won't kill response time (I know...get a new computer - maybe later this year).

I've used Sunbelt Security's Vipre for several years and it's been extremely reliable, uses very little resources and has a "family" plan where you pay one set price and you can use it on all your pc's. They also just announced a lifetime one time fee which I may also look into.

I have used them all over the years. The best I have found is not even mentioned by you. It is Vipre, low resources use and I have never had anything get by it. JustMyOpinion

I am been using Panda AV since a lot of years ago.
It had worked fine for me.
It is silent and safe.
It is working in a netbook Windows XP and on my dell 3700 with Seven.
Sorrily, there is no Ubuntu version for my desktop.

Bob, where did this list come from? Are you really saying that the programs listed are, in your opinion, the "Best Paid Anti-Virus Programs." Based on the "reviews" you posted, I wouldn't try any of them.

Chalk up another vote for Vipre. I also add Prevx (Free) and they run without conflict or using much in resources. Norton/McAffee used to be the Microsoft of the antivirus world (biggest players but not the best products). Now Microsoft won't be out-Microsofted and is (again) pushing an A/V solution.

EDITOR'S NOTE: I said they are "some of the best" security programs. Certainly there are another 10 or 12 that I could have mentioned, but I try hard to keep my articles in the 500-700 word range, and this one was running long already.

Bob, Comcast is my Internet Service Provider. They offer "Constant Guard" protection free to subscribers, but it is through Norton. I have hesitated to use this free protection because of Norton's reputation as a resource hog, and I don't like the fact that it is hard to uninstall. I currently have the paid version of Webroot, but I was planning to switch to AVG's paid version. Would it make more sense for me to use the Comcast protection? I was a bit surprised that you didn't mention AVG in your list.
Thanks much.

I also am using Sunbelts Vipre Premium, it has kept my desktop and laptop secure and is not a resource hog. It is reasonably priced and all over great protection. I like it better then the previous ones I have used such as Norton, Trend Micro, Bit Defender and Security Essentials.

NOD32 is the ONLY way to go! It consistently scores the best in independent reviews. Don't waste time AND jeopardize your machine with anything else.

I had used Kaspersky for a year and liked it a lot, but my year ended and I just didn't have the money to pay for another... that's when I tried Norton cause it was free with my Comcast subscription. I was apprehensive, because I remembered how it hogged up my resources... but now I am extremely happy with it. I no longer feel it is the big memory hog it once was. They've really improved on it. And I like the protection it gives me when surfing the web. Also like the Norton tool bar that saves my passwords securely. I'd definitly recommend it.
