I tried AVG. I didn't like the way it took over the chrome browser for their own. It seemed too slow. Maybe because a VPN is included with the package? Back using Chrome and Malwarebytyes Pro. Excellent support from them as they promptly cleaned malware from two computers (browser redirects) that their scan didn't pick up.

Started with Trend Micro... switched to Avast free for a.few years used a paid version of Avast for a few years on mine my wife's laptops and on our our tablets and my cellphone. But as you say Avast's constant marketing got to be too much so dropped using it. Now I'm using using Microsoft Security. Maybe I'll check out AVG.

To me, there is a clear distinction between these two products and Avira. These products will not let you download and save/use YTD Video Downloader - an invaluable free app - while Avira does. So, I don't notice fractions of a second loading delays or an occasional passing of malware but I definitely miss YTD Video Downloader, which Avira gives me the option of installing. It's my computer and I want the option.

I used AVG for multiple years. I stopped because they started scoring relatively poorly on the tests run by the independent testers. Glad to hear they have incorporated the Avast antimalware engine. I will reconsider them for my personal computer.

At the office, I'm currently using COMODO (they always put it in all caps) because they allow Small Businesses to use their free product. Yep, it's right there in their product description. We have less than 15 employees and a very tight budget. So I bought their server product (a good price) and use the free products on the other computers.

The above from Google search, many more references come up. I had tried Avast because of reviews claiming it was the best but did not like it and stayed with AVG. For now I'll stay with AVG which has kept me out of trouble all those years and just hope quality does not suffer. Mergers too often do not benefit the customers.

I have used AVG Free for a few years now and I am very happy on it's performance and it is better than the paid and free ones I used in the past. I do recommend it.

I've use the free AVG on my Mac computer for quite a few years. To date I have had no problems whatsoever. I'm happy.

this may sound off-topic, but bear with me. I had AVG and it started to get hinky and I went to Avast. it was okay, however I had a hard drive failure.

at present moment, I have neither, but have MicroSoft Defender, and periodically, I get a message telling me I don't have any anti-virus pgm. my tech says the Defender is enough. I am very cautious about bringing malware on board.

Several years ago I changed to Avast on your advice and have been happy with it until recently when it has starting to bug me to upgrade. It tells me I have all sorts of performance issues on my computer and if I click on the button to repair them it tells me that I need to buy the paid version to do so.
I think time to go back to AVG.

I have Webroot on my laptop. How does Webroot compare with AVG and Avast?

Bob - Re: Avast - I do not like a security helper that wants me to forswear all others, even those that only run when I want. Therefore - no Avast.

I use Malwarebytes how do these work with it, if necessary?

I used AVG for quite a few years, in fact the first antivirus I ever used after uninstalling the crap that came with the computer.
But started having issues with it so based partly on your recommendations at the time switched to Avast and have never looked back.

On some of my computers, I use AVG; on others, Avast, but I favor AVG because it seems to give me less pop-up ads.

Sure would like to know what effect the "joining" of the two will have.

I have been using AVG Free for around 10 years now. I like the way it installs simply with no fuss and on any version of windows. Have tried all the other well known anti virus programs, some of which were recommended by Bob Rankin, but I keep going back to AVG. I also use Malwarebytes which runs seamlessly with AVG. Both these programs combined with CCleaner have kept my computers running safe and clutter free for many years now.

I am wondering if Mr. Rankin means that he has AVG installed in his system when he states " AVG wins me over". I also love performance and anything that dings performance by even 5% gets me upset; although I run an Intel i7-6700K overclocked at 4.7GHz desktop running Win10Pro. When all else fails, I always end up selecting FREEware over anything that provides an upgrade provisions especially if it is on a yearly subscription model. I have not OCD’d over AV for a few decades now but I am way OCD about running encryption on my 6 drives and a good dose of Acronis every few months.
But none of the above means that I don’t appreciate the angst Mr. Rankin goes thru in attempts to make us aware with such critical information. Thank you.

I am in middle of removing AVG from all my computers, it was good compared to Norton's which(bogged machines down).
Just recently when trying to re save a upgraded word doc to PDF,when asking permission too overwrite it I had denial as it was open in AVG (!!!!!!).
I tried to turn off or exit AVG but there did not appear to be any way I could do it.
A forced removal with Wise Programmer Uninstaller got rid of AVG, bingo I could now save as PDF.
A refurbished desk top computer with licensed Win 10 has Avast free giving no problems at this stage so I installed the free version of it on the laptop and all seems to be running well at his stage.

someone asked about "Webroot" Did you read the Terms of Agreement before installing it? They tell you that they share a lot of your information with over 300 Ad companies (yes they list them by name)
unless you opt out..AND...you have to opt out on each company individually.....You did opt out ..didn't you?
So, my question is...does Avast or AVG
do the same thing?

It would be of interest to know which of the protection programs can run together without causing significant performance impact or actually causing problems. My understanding is that running AVG or AVAST with Malwarebytes and CCLEANER is OK. Is that right? Are any of the paid-for versions worth the purchase price.
What about McAfee Internet Security and other such packages.
