disabled rpc service or made it local and want to correct this?

start ->regedit ->hkey_local_machine -> system ->

current_control_set ->services ->RpcSs ->ObjectName must be NT Authority\NetworkService

Maybe you must also delete ~current_control_set->hardware profiles->current ->system ->enum ->root->legacy_rpcss.

Did all of the above to no avail. Did happen to find that the svchost.exe file was labeled svchost.exe.bak for some reason, probably before the damage to the system. Renamed to svchost.exe and the RPC services started loading properly.

Now to fix the rest of the services not loading, like IPSEC...

Thank you!!! I had cleaned up most everything but was resolved to having the issue with the printer unable to re-install. This was the problem and your instruction worked like a gem. I ended up having to e-mail the correct registry entry as a zip file so that outlook would not block it but after saving it and unzipping it has everything running smoothly. What a life saver!!! Thanks again.

Thanks so much for your article but I am not a techie person-I was printing wirelessly from my new laptop (Vista) to a new printer installed on my old pc(xp)-everything worked fine for a week and now when I go to print, I get the RPC server unavail.

tried getting the rpc to start automatically and that didn't work-would like to try your solution but have no idea how to "import a registry"-one guy mentions emailing it to himself but what link do i email? Really messin me up that I can no longer print from my laptop. I am single mom running my own business w/ 2 teenagers and it even has them stumped. Usually, they teach me everything. Thanks for your time and help woth this.

EDITOR'S NOTE: I think your best bet is a System Restore. See http://askbobrankin.com/system_restore.html

I have a new VISTA PC with an HP PSC1510 printer wired to it. Another PC running XP SP2 and up to date is located 30 ft away and works wirelessly for surfing and email. I want to print from the XP PC to the Printer wired to the Vista PC. Every time I try to print I get the error "RPC Server Unavailable". The "REMOTE PROCEDURE CALL" entry shows "STARTED" in "CONTROL PANEL/ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS/SERVICES. Any help would be much appreciated.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Did you follow all the steps in this article: http://askbobrankin.com/wireless_printing.html ? If so, see if there might be a firewall interfering. There could also be a problem if security software blocks a registry change during the printer install.

Here was my Problem. I couldn't sync with Internet time. Error was the "RPC server is unavailable error" everytime i clicked "update now" under Vista Home Premium Sp1 "Date and Time". I went to my Working machine and Exported the registry's using Regedit then Imported then to my error machine. Went back to Admin/serives on my error machine Made Sure that both RPC and RPC Locator where started and set on "auto" made sure "windows time" was started and set on "auto". Then opened up the command prompt

Run>>cmd. Type the following.

1. net stop w32time (it will say the service was stopped)

2. w32tm /unregister (it will say unreg.)

3. w32tm /register (it will confirm reg.)

4. net start w32time (it will confirm service started) if not then u have a bigger problem.

5. w32tm /resync (bam succefully synced.)

no more problems with RPC Server.

I can set my date to any year before 2005.... but beyond that it always reverts to that year. I'm having the RPC server is unavailable message. My computer did have a Thai year (i.e. 2058 or something) but someone changed it to GMT. Any help for someone that doesn't understand much computer jargon?

EDITOR'S NOTE: I don't understand why you want to change the date, and how that relates to the RPC problem.

Hi Bob, I found your article helpful, but when I can't find the Rpc in the services list. I have the RpcSs file, though. How would I go about looking for the Rpc file? I'm trying to back up my mum's PC to the Apple Time Capsule, but I only get so far before I reach the error message: "The network share could not be accessed for the following reason: The RPC server is unavailable. (0x800706BA) Please ensure that the network location is valid." Help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, I am new here and need some help. My PC crashed and I decided to get an upgrade. So I got a 500GB hard disk and then started to install my windows XP media center. Everything worked fine and after finishing the installation I started to install other drivers. That is when the problem stated. As I had an ATI card I used the original CD to install the driver but the moment I clicked the install option this dialog box pops out

Setup fails to launch installation engine - The RPC server is unavailable

And after that the installation close and that it. I tried other driver like my printer’s driver and it says the same. I can’t do much and really need your help. I also noticed that under Administrative Tools - Computer Management - under Storage, when I click on it a dialog pop up and says Logical Disk Manager - The RPC server is unavailable. Yes i did export and then import the RPCSS file and it did not work.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Did you export the RPC keys from a DIFFERENT (working) machine?

I have problem with NetLimiter 2. I got these:

"Windows could not start the NetLimiter on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code 1."

I cant start Netlimiter Service. Everything was OK before. I uninstal it manual and reinstall again, but nothing. When I start netlimiter exe file I get this message: "Couldn't connect to NetLimiter 2 service. The RPC server is not listening." What to do?

Thank you so much, had problem with printing.

All I had to do was go into service under control panel like you described and restart RPC Locator service.

There are two processes related to this:

- Remote Procedure Call (RPC)

- Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator

For some reason, the actual RPC process was started but the 2nd one was set to 'manual'. Restarted the process and changed its property back to 'Automatic' and ta-da! humming of print sound, music to my ear.

Hello. I just wanted to write and let you know that I had a similar problem with one of my client's machines, but I solved the problem through different means. After checking to see that the RPC and RPC locater were running using services.msc, I stumbled across an article that suggested I also try the DCOM services. I did so, discovered that it wasn't starting, started it, and got it to work.

It was a bit of a different situation. I was trying to install drivers after a clean install of XP, but the problem was similar enough that I found your article. This solution might just be worthwhile for your readers as well.

Hello Sir, There is problem in computer that my system restore is disabled, its saying as 'System Restore is unable to protect your computer. Please restart your computer, then start your system restore again', another error showing on the desktop as 'Application Launcher' describing as Unable to load configuration. Internet connection is disabled (its showing in a connected state but opening any web page). Any window opened and minimized doesn't show on the taskbar. Again I tried to use system restore from 'Perfect Optimizer' software, saying as RPC server is unavailable. Going into the control panel to login as administrator but the user account window is showing blank. I tried to enable the system restore through group policy editor to enable through the clicking the properties of 'Turn off the Management' but the properties is opening at all. Please help me and do a favour.

EDITOR'S NOTE: You mentioned "system restore from Perfect Optimizer" which sounds like it's NOT the System Restore function built into Windows. See http://www.askbobrankin.com/system_restore.html

I am having the same problems except I have not eliminated the virus yet. I am trying to get access to the internet with the computer but my network connection doesn't get access because the RPC is not available. When I try to restart it - I get - Error 2 The system cannot find the files specified.

Any thoughts?
