I tried magicJack Plus with the lower speed DSL (about 1 Meg download and 400 Meg up), as a potential replacement for my landline - it would have saved me about $200 per year.
In the critical test that it failed, I used it to phone my landline, and placed the wired phone in front of a loudspeaker playing music. I listened on a phone connected to the magicJack, thus I was using magicJack to download. The result had several hiccups (maybe 0.1-0.2 seconds long) (randomly) within a minute. This was annoying, but tolerable. The problem that I could not accept was the longer gaps of 2-3 seconds (randomly) a minute or so apart.
So, if you have a faster Internet connection, or are more tolerant, magicJack plus probably can replace a landline very economically.
You should, of course, perform your own tests.
[Incidentally, my own phone wiring uses a master DSL filter rather than an individual DSL filter on each extension phone - I found that one magicJack plus could indeed feed my entire string of extension phones.]

I have MagicJack conneted via Clear wireless internet. Clear is a lousy ISP so MJ does not function well on their service. The voice drops in and out. If you have a cable connection you probably will do OK.

Hi,
We were suspicious of MJ at the start... but have had MJ for about 3 years and use it regularly... especially when we are travelling overseas - great for making 'free' calls from overseas as if you are in the US! From overseas, just dial the area code and number and connect!
Did have a problem once - but that was because of other programs running at the same time. Gave MJ priority and no problems since.

Recently I discovered per MJ help that I now have to disable my CA internet firewall otherwise I can't hear using my MJ. My ISP is TimeWarnerCable and CA is their free internet protection. As you know they offer phone and TV service as well as internet. So maybe they did this as black ops to their phone competitor MJ. Shame on TimeWarner.

I purchased MJ early on cuz I am a geek and everybody figures I know all the answers. I agree 100% with Bob. It is a great device and not a scam. The carn thing just works and it also kind of tell you just how much of a rip off the plain old phone service really is. I bought the 5 year plan on my first renewal date. At the time it was 59 bucks for 5 years (now 69) so I have excellent unlimited LD for 11.80 per year. Yes I am smiling.
PS Yes there have been a few hiccups along the way but for 11.80 a year I get over it.
PPS. For 11.80 a year I do not expect them to jump every time I have that hiccup.

I used MagicJack for a while, but I found something better...it is ObiTalk.
You can purchase the ObiTalk model 100 for $40 from Amazon.com, when used in conjunction with Google Voice, give you totally free phone service.

Another plus is it doesn't require a computer to be running to work, just an internet connection.

The call quality is better than MagicJack too.

Question: Can M.J. be used on basic dial up? I think Dial up is now up to 56K speed? Thats what I use for my computer, to save money. I have a 4 gb ram, and quad core, if that means anything.

EDITOR'S NOTE: I don't think MJ will work on a dialup line. You'd need at least basic DSL service.

I can not call small towns using majic jack in Minnesota. They do not have an interconnect agreement with the small towns. It worked when I started MJ about four years ago, but about the last 2 1/2 years it doesn't.

How does Magic Jack compare to other VOIP products, like skype and google voice? That is what I would like to know, I am curently using skype on a skype phone, and it costs less than $5 a month for unlimited calling in canada and the usa.

I live in the Philippines and use my magicjack to call free to the USA. I have an extra one, and when I travel overseas from time to time, I bring it with me to call the magicjack at home in the Philippines for free!!!

Can you make calls FROM overseas to CELL phone numbers here in the U.S. (as opposed to land line numbers)? VOIP services were common in France to call the U.S., but it was free only to landline numbers. There was a charge if to cell phones. How about MJ?

The new MJ+ is 69.95 and the annual renewal is 29.95-
NOT 19.95
You can have your landline number ported for a one time fee of 19.95
You can use it with your computer or just plug in to your router. An ethernet cable comes with the package.

I bought a M.J. when it first came out and use it for my Business phone. I have it hooked up to an old laptop that I don't use anymore and set it on a shelf. I'm thinking about buying the New one that dose not need a computer.

The only downside that I have found is the inability to send faxes.

I see a lot of people saying how much they are saving on calls since they got MJ. But they still must be paying for their DSL thru either a phone co or cable, right?

When MJ came out a few years ago I was a victim of the scam. All was good until I had to "call" them. You must know that you can't actually talk to a representative- you can only text-WTF!
Every time I was getting to the fact that mine was not working I was transfered "uP" the line and started all over again. After at least 5 hours I was no further ahead and gave up. That was their goal all along. A waste of time and money. No thanks!!!
