Chris,
I'm using the older MJ, but that does sound correct. I'm in area code 757 and ran into the same problem when I was using Vonage and tried to get a local number.
Have you contacted your land line provider and asked about the issue? It MIGHT be that since you have an existing account (number)that it might not be able to be ported. Be prepared for a hassle. Land line providers don't like losing customers.
I think you can change your MJ number after you establish the initial account. $10 if I recall correctly. Once you dump the land line, you MIGHT be able to get the number.
Unless your current number is used for business, I'd suggest letting folks know of your MJ number prior to dumping the land line. It's a bit of a hassle, but well worth the $$$ in savings.

FYI I had to call frontier to start a transfer to magicjack plus. They told me it would take few days. I hope it works cause everybody has my number. They didn't give me any problems. They must block the transfer until you ask them it release your number.

I purchased 2 Magic Jack pluses, 1 for myself and 1 for a friend and both of them work excellant via. the computer, and without the computer. We have not had any dropped calls, or any other problems. I did figure out that in keeping your old number, your old phone company will drag their heels in releasing your old number, and you are better off getting a new number and save the $19.95 charge per year, for the old number. Also the phone reception etc. is better than ATT & cable. MJ is the best phone service I`ve ever had.

I haven't read through all the comments to see whether this has already been mentioned, but a very good alternative is the OBIhai 110 VOIP device. It's about $50 on Amazon, has terrific sound quality, and no annual fee. The website is: http://obihai.com/

Duane,
I agree about land line providers dragging their heels. When I had Vonage, I waited 3 months only to find out that the land line provider didn't have a porting agreement with them. What later prompted me to leave Vonage and switch to MJ was that Vonage didn't include the monthly taxes and fees in their advertised price. I'm a bit (VERY) skeptical that MJ has a porting agreement with ALL land line providers in the US. Since I already had a prepaid cell phone, getting a new MJ number wasn't a problem.

Im still trying to port landline to magicjack. I was told it would take 10 days. I would get an email telling me the port was ready. So i have tried countless times to port # and my # cant be ported at this time. Also it says NO REQUEST TO TRANSFER HAVE BEEN MADE ON THIS ACCOUNT! Give me a break I have chatted many time about porting. I was given a link to port my # and still nothing. The FCC says it should only take a few days to transfer a #. Is mj just feeding me a line of crap?? Everyday that it takes to transfer # is another day I pay on my landline!!
Does anyone have any advice? Should i just throw in the towel and take the mj # i was given?

Bob - it would be useful please to remember that not all your avid followers live in the USA! This device after much searching and chatting is not for anyone living outside the USA unless you are calling another user. Phone calls from, for example, France to the UK are not possible.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Not so fast... lots of people take their MJ when they travel from the USA to other countries, and they can still receive calls to their US numbers. Similarly, many people outside the USA use the MJ to call relatives in the US, without incurring expensive long distance charges.

Chris, We're also in Va and have had MJ for well over a year with minimal problems, all computer or service related. We were informed our # was not available for port and just had MJ assign one, then notified all family and friends etc of the new number and allowed 1 month over on old service for the change. It worked beautifully! We,re very happy with MJ, even bought extra 5 years of service for $75. Great deal, no phone bill for 6 years!! Very nice. Cost? less than 2 months basic Verizon.

John,
I echo what Bob said. Just because it doesn't work between the UK and France doesn't mean it will not work between the UK and US. Or FR and the US. Does the UK still require a license to own a television? It might be part of possible UK internet restrictions on phone VOIP calls between nations. There might also be restrictions between IP providers in the UK and FR, especially if they make more $$$ for phone services.
John, MJ doesn't require that the party that you are calling have a MJ in the US That said I'm wondering if there isn't a different version of MJ compared to the US and UK?
If you would care to respond with your MJ number, I can give you a call from the US as a test. Or vice versa. Not sure how the call system works from the UK, but my number is area code 850 810 6050. I'm hot sure how you would dial out with a country code on an overseas call.
Bob, you were right regarding the US version of MJ, but there may indeed be restrictions if there is a Euro version.
John, can you use MJ to call others within the UK?
Sorry for the lengthy reply. :)

Chris.. You should call your original phone service provider and ask them to cut you loose.

I had the same problem you describe and until I called Comcast I couldn't receive calls to the MJP. In fact, both services (MJ and Comcast) were providing dial tone. And this was 'after' I got the MJ email saying the port was finished and I should be able to call in and out.

BTW.... MJ tech chat was no help at all.

You aren't even using the same device on the other side of the pond.

why does the fcc.gov website state that any # can be transfered to any carrier. When in fact some companies can't make a deal with the company your trying to switch to. I was told in a chat with a magicjack cs person if my # can be ported than i will pay a one time fee and a yearly fee to keep that #. Once i read the TOS its in there.
I have talked to both companies mj and frontier and both blame each other for the lack of porting.
The frontier person said porting a # to a VOIP carrier is the hardest thing to do because they lack the manpower to do the port. So in the meantime I'm paying for 2 phone lines.

The FCC only requires portability within the local area. I wasn't able to obtain a MJ number within area code 757 (LOCAL AREA). I did find some interesting info from the FCC website on the issue.

http://www.fcc.gov/guides/portability-keeping-your-phone-number-when-changing-service-providers

MJ really should post the conditions about keeping your old # in the ads. Technically what they say is true, but only when it applies to local areas. Again, if MJ doesn't offer numbers in your area, you will NOT be able to port your number.

I guess i will have to retract all the negative things i posted about magicjack plus. I don't know if all the chats i had with mj cs that solved my problem with # porting. I tried to port number again on 2/21/2012 and the port went through i was shocked. I answered all the questions and was told the transfer would take 5 to 10 business days. On 2/23/2012 I recieved an email telling me the transfer was complete. I was so shocked. I have tried making calls and had someone call me and it all works.! The only thing I have not tried is making long distance calls. I guess I can drop the old greedy phone company now.

Chris,
I think my following suggestion from 30 January was what actually SOLVED your problem.
"Chris,

Oh, and by the way,
You're welcome.
