I used magic jack for about 4 years. It work great as a supplement for my pay by the minute cell phone plan. It was annoying during power outages and if my laptop died because I forgot to charge it. The small quams were stark into contrast to it's bargain of $20 a year.

I have had MJP for 2 years and now they want me to pay for international prepaid minutes to contact a phone number less than 5 miles from my home and all local calls in my area. Upon contacting customer service live chat; I was recited the agreement in the TERMS OF SERVICE number 4. Number 3 contradicts number 4.I was also told I was contacting a NON (ILEC) number. I had been calling these same nubers for two years with their service. The customer service representative was even rude. I guess you get what you pay for.... Saleen

Caveat Emptor: I jumped in and bought MJ+ (with 5 years service)after hearing some good comments. I got the hardware registered and called AT&T to disconnect my $98/mo home phone. The agent asked me about "Alarm Sys" and "Dish Network". Dish said they knew of no problems, ditto w/Alarm Co. I called MJ and they said "We do not recommend using MJ+ with alarm systems or Dish (cable) systems. Hmmm? I pressed for more info... but was NOT happy with the reasons given... asked if their was a 'human' I could talk to... no answer. I WISH BOB COULD ANSWER THIS OR COMMENT. I'm on a 30 day trial, so time is crutial. My unanswered question is "When I connect MJ+ to the Ethernet and phone line, is my WHOLE HOUSE connected to MJ+?" HELP Nov 1 2012

I have used the original MJ for 3 years now with no problems. I did go to Goodwill and bought a $40 used computer to run the MJ 24 seven.

Bob.... I have been using MJ for 3-4 years now. I have the original device and brought the MJP when it first came out last year. BOTH have worked flawlessly for me. There is NO way that I would pay $25 per month for a local phone service or even Vonage (which I used when it first came out). The price and service of the devices are excellent. My wife, who is Chinese, and I make a lots of international calls as well as national long distance calls. Just great for price. I also can send FAX with it. Can't say enough good things. Why are people still paying AT&T and other phone companies their fees when you have this which is only the cost of ONE month for any entire year..???

I am reading all the information regarding the Magic jack in this blog. The service which you provide that we can use this device to enables phone calls over the Internet. The best thing of this device is that it can competes with any Phone System service like VOIP, Vonage and Skype etc.I need to share it with my friends.

I purchased MJ a number of years ago and got less than 4 months out of it as I had to have a program removed from my computer. When the tech. was done, I discovered my MJ no longer worked! I contacted MJ every way I could think of for several hours over the course of a few weeks and finally gave up!
I was contacted by MJ after my first year about my bill and I just refused to pay it!

purchased a five year plan one year ago. Last week my service was cut off and I'm being asked to renew my subscription. This is a scam. The service has worked pretty well for the most part, but the customer service is appalling, very difficult to get a live person. When one does appear their interest is in you buying another year of service. I would not recommend it to anyone.

My Magic Jack Plus is about 6 months old, my phone started to show "no line". I have changed the phone line, the line to the computer, got a new phone etc. No help from MJ customer service, I don't know what to do....buy a new MJ or go back to AT&T.
Any thoughts.......

I just got a discounted MJ+ because I have an original MJ. Anyway, what they don't tell you in the MJ+ Quickstart guide is:

You must plug the MJU+ into a USB port the first time you use it so that it can be registered and a phone number assigned and 911 information can be set up and the options and payment plan can be worked out. That's fine and dandy.

After that, you are given the option to use the MJ+ through the computer or through a router/modem. If you choose to run it through a router, there are additional steps that might have to be taken. Some port forwarding might have to be done to get the MJ+ to accept incoming calls. I had to do it to mine. The information to fix incoming call issues with a MJ+ is available online at: magicjacksupport.com

I have used the original MJ for more than 4 years and I have no real problems to report. It's a hell of a deal (for me).

I too use the old original magic jack. I've been using it for nearly 5 yrs. An AT&T tech told me that ATT and anyone using their lines for internet could no longer have their own VOIP but would have to use (and pay extra) for ATT's VOIP. I went wireless about 2 mos ago and can use my magicjack now. However the wireless system costs more so it's like you're damned if you do and damned if you don't!

MagicJack's nearest competition at the cheap end of VOIP is NetTalk, whose Duo likewise requires a broadband connection but doesn't depend on a computer.

To get to a real live magicJack person, not a "Chat" person, call 561-594-9787. You may have to wait many minutes, but, depending on your need, it may be worth your while.

Here is my take on Magic Jack. IT WORKS. I have an unused laptop that runs my MJ. The laptop is plugged in constantly and "Always ON" My preferred system is "XP" but the MJ is currently running on "Vista". I have it plugged into a cordless phone. If the power goes out, the laptop has a battery. I have "Verizon Fios" which also has a battery. And, I also have an entire house back-up generator. I rarely use the MJ since cell phones, but the number is good to give out instead of my cell number. My location is accepted by "911" as the green dot shows.

I also run "Apple" icloud on the the same laptop and use the same laptop to sync and charge the iphone.

I have yet to "fax" using the MJ and the computer "fax" software. BUT I was successful in using a "FAX" machine.

All-in-all, for $19.95 a year. "EXCELLENT"

"Keep your same phone number" is what they claim on the ads now. My only reason for getting MagicJack. Then I get it, set it up, and get a message that that won't work. I've had my same home phone for 35 years, for business, school, everything, even when we got cell phones. I called about this, was told "We don't have an agreement yet with your local phone company". Then why did they say that in the ads? Took this issue to state att'y general's office, was told this wasn't misrepresentation. Ad didn't say "Maybe you can keep your same number, IF we have an agreement."

I understand the "same number for years" issue. Most phone companies will hold your number for a small fee for an extended period of time. You can use call forwarding to the MJ number. This can(?) alieviate that issue until contacts start to use your MJ number. I also believe the phone company informs the contact of the number being forwarded to "THE" MJ number. I'm sure that the many issues involved can be avoided/solved by patience with the MJ. Remember ... $19.95 a year !!! If you have a cell phone you had the same issues until your contacts became familiar with your cell number. MJ is a god-send to people who become use to it. It has many conviences, they just need to be explored. I waited 5 years before purchasing MJ. I investigated, searched, and understood what it is capable of doing. I am using the original MJ and I am aware of the upgrades to "NO COMPUTER NEEDED" MJ. I am satisfied with the original MJ and currently have NO plans to upgrade. If anyone decides to use the MJ, be patient, understand its capabilities and the requirements needed to work successfuly. You can use/have the MJ as an additional Number until you are comfortable/satisfied with it before dropping your phone company. Information "IS" the most important ingrediant for "ANY" decision. It will cost $20.00 to find out if "YOU" can accept the MJ. I can confidently say that the MJ is a great product for "MOST" households that have a computer they are willing to leave on. As for a business ... well ... how does it work at home ???

MJ is a great alternative to paying a monthly phone bill however it does have its drawbacks. 1 - fax machines do not work with majic jack (confirmed with customer service)and 2 unless you have a new phone system that has a base and multiple extensions you will only have one phone. But if this is acceptable then you have a great service
