well for me is good to have this magic jack. the first one i set in my own computer and later i purchase a second that after i register with my zip code in Ocala, fl. i send to my son in central america. both have the same zip code 352, so is a local call. i enjoy taking with my son and grandson as long as i want, any time, and clear. only your computer must be running of course to make o receive phone calls. 40 dollars a year for that service. no bad.AHHHh and he can call anybody in USA, no only me.

I purchased a magicJack and found out that it had the number I previously used after they assigned it to another person. And then they had the audacity to want to charge me $10 for a new number. No thank you, magicJack!

I've used my MJ successfully on my laptop at home and traveling for a year. No Problems, until this week. Now each time I start MJ, the startup is normal but then it shuts down after about 2 minutes with a message that says; 'Magic Jack has stopped working'. Unfortunately there are no further diagnostics to help me troubleshoot the problem and the company's biggest problem is exposed. That is, it has no customer technical support.
So now I'm stuck as to what to do next. Has anyone else had this problem and if so, have you had any success fixing it? Thanks!

I have been using MJ for two years now and have not had any problems with it at all. The calls are clear. I love the mobility of the device. I did purchase for one dollar the extended warranty, just in case the device crashes. I would recommend Magic Jack to anyone with high speed internet who wants to reduce their phone bill.

To Chuck Ross,
I found this link about MJ has stopped working. Sounds like you might have a USB problem.

I looked into this after reading the article and the service doesn't appear to be available in Australia.
Does anyone have any recommendations for something similar that I can use here? I already have Skype.
Thanks.

I have been a MJ user for several years with generally good response. Recently my hard drive crashed and I cannot get MJ to function on the new hard drive at all. I dont know who to call as there is no tech support that I can find. Anyone have a solution? Also, if I buy a MJ Plus will my left over annual fees be usable from the old 5 year MJ purchase>

THANKS to Steve in VA. Finally success and my Magic Jack is back up and running as it should. I went into that website of Microsoft Answers that Steve kindly provided and in one of the fourm posts I found this website; http://www.magicjack.com/1/magicfix.asp
After much navigating I found a live chat service. Not sure how this works but it seems to be a generic tech support service that presumably is funded by Magic Jack and any other companies that use them to provide customer support rather than investing in their own customer support infrastructure. Anyway, after a 2 hour online chat dialogue (halfway thru I was escalated to their highest support level) and after being directed into areas of the computer I have never explored and being instructed to do things that I didn't understand, we solved the problem. Still not sure exactly how. Arguably we as consumers shouldn't have to jump thru these kind of hoops to get a tech problem solved (I would estimate I have spent 10-15 hours on this over a period of time) but hey, I'm a happy camper to have this working again. Buy yourself a beer on me Steve and thanks again!

To AFL in CA,

Two questions. assuming you are using Windows as your operating system, have you ran Windows update? Second question is what do you mean by not working? Do you see the MJ screen show up when you try to connect?

To Chuck Ross,

You're welcome and I'm glad I was able to be of some help. One thing I wanted to mention to all is how to run MagicFix. IF you can see the MJ screen, left click on MENU, then select Advanced Users, then run MagicFix.

I'll grant you that MJ tech support is indeed lacking, but for the price, what can you expect?

Regarding question about 2-line phones you say 'no'. But it seems like you are answering whether the MJ+ will handle two lines and your answer would be correct. It seems like the question actually being asked was: Could I make the MJ+ line one of the lines going into my two line business phone?
Then I could keep my local # as line one and the MJ+ number as line two for long distance calling? Wouldn't I just have to wire the two active wires from each phone line cable into a typical four wire jack to make a typical two-line jack. Can then run both #'s out of one desktop two-line phone with a standard four wire phone cable?

Or, per my two line comment...for a standard two line phone rather than rewire a standard jack to plug into the dual line slot on the phone base, use a two line jack. Run my old local line into one jack slot, the MJ+ line into the other slot. Then plug a line into each jack and then into the line 1 slot and the line 2 slot on the 2-line phone base.
Would that not work?

Tom,
Provided your business phone has two separate inputs, I'd say a MJ and land line input would work fine. My only concern would be if your business phone was a digital line coming from a phone server. I'm not sure about MJ+, since I don't have one, but I suspect they would function the same.
Another point I wanted to bring up is DO NOT use your existing house wiring for MJ if you you plan on keeping your land line. From what I've read, the incoming ring signal can fry the MJ.

Tom,
Another possible concern is the REN(Ringer Equivalence Number) of your dual input business phone. MJ (and probably MJ+) will only handle a limited number of corded phones. You should be able to find the REN posted on the bottom of your phone. If it's a cordless business phone, it's probably less than 1. The thing about MJ and RENs is that if you have too high of a total REN number, you'll have volume issues when using MJ. And you might not even see the incoming light.

I recently got rid of MJ. It didn't perform well for me at all. Using Vista and Win7 for both attempts. I probably spent 3 to 4 hours on the chat line and via phone trying to get it to work properly. I constantly had calls dropped, or was unable to make calls. I really wanted it to work, but I couldn't make it happen. I still had the same problems even when I purchased a new computer (Win7). The tech support people are most likely outsourced and they all seem to work out of the same problem solving book. I wasn't overly impressed with CS. Since then, I have joined the OOMA bandwagon and have had absolutely no problems. The monthly charge is about $3.47 per month. My computer doesn't have to be on for the phone to function. MJ requires your computer to be running for the phone to work.
