I have had a magic Jack for a year and recently got a second one. They have their quirks and service outages. I wouldn't recommend one for someone who is not at least a bit technically capable. If you want something that works WELL without bumps in the road, Magic Jack isn't for you. Calling customer service a joke is an understatement.
However for someone who is technically savvy enough to deal with playing around with things and is patient for technology, Magic Jack does have the potential to be a great value as long as the hardware and software on the company's side is working properly. I have experienced many shortcomings with it's functionality that are unresolvable until they magically fix themselves or the engineers fix it. But customer service is not to credit for any actual "fixes".
It is a great value if you can deal with it not being 100% all of the time. When it is all working well, it is AWESOME. If it worked perfectly all of the time, I would gladly pay more for it.
For anyone with reservations on shelling out the dough, they are now available at many local retailers such as Radio Shack and Best Buy, so you can return it within store policy rather than mail order or online and have to wait and never get a refund. But I do think that the high sales volume through the retailers has contributed to some bottlenecking of their servers because things worked more smoothly before they started selling them in stores. If they keep selling them, it would be logical that the service should improve due to increased profits, given time to catch up. You'd think. I'd be surprised if it doesn't get worse before it gets better. Or folds altogether.
As of 12-09 both of my lines are working perfectly after having NOT been working well for some time.

Bob, I know the computer must be on for Magic Jack to work, but can it be in hibernation mode, or does if have to be up and actively running?

EDITOR'S NOTE: Your computer is powered down in Hibernation mode, so Magic Jack will not work.

Anybody I know, including myself have complaints about Magic jack. It is always Choppy, either my end, or the other persons we talk. And in the middle of the conversation, the phones get disconnected. It is cheap, but, if you can afford, do not take Magic Jack. Magic Jack offices also well aware of their poor perfomance - that is why there is no way you can contact them for any complaints. So, again, it is cheap, but if you want good reception, stay away from magic jack, in my opinion.

I bought magic jack instrument in the last 2 years and never make use of it as I suppose, but now wants to use it and wants me to renew, there was no option to renew for $19.99 per year, instead asking for $39.95 for a new instrument, what do I need to do because I already have the instrument.

Please advise as soon as possible.

Thanks

How good is the call forwarding service? If the problems people seem to be having are with their PC (or with their PC powered off), it seems to me like you could just forward your MJ line to your cell #. Then you escape having to deal with the actual jack and how good your PC is.

No?

Your article on MagicJack is good overall but some clarification on one point should be made. To use MagicJack, you must have a conection to the internet. In many cases, such as those who have DSL, the ISP (Internet Providor Service) is your phone company. So you still have to pay for that service even if you terminate your landline telephone service. Also, magic jack only operates, as far as I can see, when a phone is connected to magic jack. That could limit the number of phones which can be used in a house to one. Possible if linked to a cordless with extra handsets, that it could be used on more than one handset.

The above thoughts just occurred as I read the article. As I said, overall, it was excellent nut a tweak or two sometimes helps :)

Best regards

I've just renewed my service. I love it. It works and if you want service for what you are paying, good luck. It is intended to be self contained. If you want support at these prices, you might as well get Vonage and pay the $30+ or so a month. I have both Vonage and Magic Jack. I've used magic jack on the road and it worked fine. I was away last June and could not get cell phone. I was able to use magic jack because I had access to broadband. I don't think they can survive if they had to provide tech support at these prices. I never used tech support because I never had to. If you don't know how to use a computer, do not get magic jack.

I just tried to install Majic Jack. From what I can tell, it installed through my "F" port USB.

I can see the file in my Documents.

I can't open the file with either Windows Photo or Paint (the only two options for the file "autorun.ico".

I do have a dial tone, but don't know what the telephone number is.

Any help?

I have used magic jack for over 2 years and yes it has its problems, but I also have had Vonage for 5 years and they had their problems when they first started, including the poor customer service. You cannot use your computer and talk on the phone with the MJ. But tell me where can you get phone service, voice mail and call forwarding for $19.95 a year. You spend that for a case of beer or to have your nails done and never complain. Its a great item for people that dont want to give their cell number to every one and it will send a voice message to you email. Magic Jack is a great Value

@ John: use your magic jack phone to call your cell phone and see what the number is on the caller ID if you don't know the number.
