I don't like that the computer must be on to use it as I turn it off most of the day. An annoying small popup to 'tell all your friends' dominates your screen for about 90 seconds while the device boots, calls constantly drop out but voice quality is generally good. I just use it to call long distance and have the other party call me back on my other local only phone service which serves my purpose fine.

I was ready to give MJ a free trial after reading Rankin's review, but after many(10) tries, I was unable to get the MJ application to accept my actual first full real name(it specified the first name) as mine. I kept being asked to provide my real first name, though I already had, as here.

I first gave my full name as it appears on my birth certificate, then it's shorter form(real also that my friends and family have used all my life, then my full name with my middle initial that I like to use on-line to distinguish those uses from others. Finally, I gave up and will never look at MJ again nor explicitly trust Bob Rankin.

EDITOR'S NOTE: I'd much rather have IMPLICIT trust, anyway. :-) But seriously, you're dumping on me because some form doesn't work??

I know my son was stationed in Kuwait and his roommate had a MJ, and my son called home on the MJ and did not have to dial any international codes, just our cell phone # and the call clarity was just fine.

365 Comments?? One for every day of the year? Every year?? I bought a MJ but when I tried to register it, I was told that I had to purchase a program or I could not register! As I did not have a Credit Card I could not proceed. No mention of that purchase before hand. I don't think it is a Scam ..........but what???

I used it for the first time today and was cut off after about ten minutes. I have since discovered that the outgoing calls are NOT unlimited. How can I get around this? I had hoped to use my low-minute cell plan to receive calls and call people back using the magicjack. I'm thinking this is not going to work. Any ideas?

I have been using the M J now for about 4 months and other than a few dropped calls after about an hour which can be a bit of problem when you are dealing with business problems and going through dozens of press this number and that number, I find that it works very well. I love it when I travel and can call my kids without extra cost. Also MJ is now available in quite a few stores in the States, like CVS and Walmart.
I found it very easy to connect and register and chose a number that suited me. For a Canadian number it does cost $10.00 more a year, still a good deal.

I think people are missing the point. It's 20 bucks a year, so if U are looking for the same service as a 30 buck + service. Not going to happen... that being said.

Cons:

not perfect by any stretch.

yes, sometimes sound is a bit chopped. Sometimes you get cut off, sometimes the phone doesn't ring, and you have to have your computer running, if you want a live line all the time. No local number for me... a minor problem really... the cell takes care of that for incoming calls.

Pros:

Dirt cheap. It works even to international numbers. It replaced my land line. Now it can be used to offset the long distance calls... or local that I would be placing on my cell phone. Lets see $20 bucks as opposed to $700 bucks a year.

My husband got magic jack about a year ago for a line he uses. We have 2 pcs networked. I'm not overly impressed by the thing - he seems ok with it, tho unhappy with how frequently he has to reboot, and the sound quality isn't great too often.
My biggest complaint is I can't access the back up drive on his computer with the blooming thing plugged in. It does something to our network where I have little access the his computer (ok so some hubbies might think that is a good thing).

I figure it is one of those you get what you pay for, and will stick with Vonage for my line. I've had it for over 5 years now with no problems.

I'm on my third year subscription now, will staart my fourth in Mar. I use magicJack to call Mexico, it's cheaper than using calling cards.
A couple of days ago a download appeared for the new format. That's when the trouble started. It kept me from being able to connect to the internet. I do have a backup computerand was able to google 'add exception to McAfee firewall'and get the right instructions.(Where I have 'McAfee' put in your firewall name) The only other problem is when I'm on magicJack, my wife picks up our land line (both lines are 900mhz wireless) a loud buzz interupts my call.Other than that, cheap and good.

I got 2 magicjack it is a good thing to connect to friends and family every week, i have been satisfied, i have them for one year and i renew for one year now i am trying to renew again but i think they do something to the page when you go to renew, i chat with them several times but they do't solve the problem, and my magicjack both were expired. I think they do this to let every one use it only for one year $39.95 then to buy another magicjack. When i try to buy directly from the site they do't allow you to buy 5 years or even the one year , they said due to high demand you can not process your order every one who want to buy can try, they oblige you to buy it from Best buy, or Radio Shack or any other shop in order to buy it only for one year. This have to be advertised for false advertising.

Nice review, Bob. I seem like to the magic jack device for the same reasons you do. It's not a miracle worker, but it does serve it's purpose.

I gave up Vonage after just a few month and got Magic Jack.Vonage was a rip off. I started using Magic Jack in 2008. i haven't had any problems with it. All the money Vonage spends on those lying commercials...they should save their money. Magic Jack is worth every penny and then some. Great little device. haven't come across anything better. I recommended it to all my friends.

Very appropriate review. Yes, I have been using MJ since early 2009, and could find no fault in their service except that in the initial period their Customer Service was deficient, in many respects, if not totally missing.
Having used it in the US for a couple of months, thereafter in the Middle East and South Asia, I can vouch for their good quality of service, notwithstanding slow/indifferent ISP-service, both land-line and Broadband, abroad. Their US/Overseas Calls Tariff is somewhat higher than one can find elsewhere, but if usage in US is only for short periods, advantage of free calls home whilst abroad far outweighs this aspect of costs. Am looking forward to renewing for another year online with MJ soon.
With improvements in quality, and constantly reducing VOIP costs to consumers, why commit for longer than a year at a time?!!
