We got Magic JAck because we wanted to save money. Connection is TERRIBLE, we have high speed and a fast computer.
MAGIC JACK will take your money and you will NOT see it back. BEWARE of long distance calls. They say they use AT&T, but when you cannot connect you STILL get charged for the calls. There is NOT MAgic JAck customer service number, so whoever takes care of your business does it behind a computer, you NEVER can talk to anybody live. MAgic JAck is a total rip off when it comes to long distance. The agents all they do is apologize and say "They are sorry but cannot refund".

Go for the sure thing with if more expensive, at least reliable phone company.

I canot give Magic JAck nothing but a bad review. Please stay away from it.

I switched from Vonage to Magic Jack. The Magic Jack works great unless you are on an extended call. I have been in the middle of lengthy business calls only to have a dialtone come up around an hour into the call. Also, I can not run all the phones in my house like I could with Vonage. I'm keeping Magic Jack as a secondary line but going back to Vonage as primary. And to Lucinda, why not hook it up. So what if you don't want some of the free features, just don't use them.

1. Installs to CD/DVD drives - have had similiar devices - this was not the case (???)

2. No 'program' to scan w/security software - not removable as far as i can see

2. Lots of junky looking ads on soft phone as well as 'sponsor' shortcuts - the everpresent Google and also Yahoo.

3. problems galore: can't set up voicemail so called 'prompts' do not pertain to anything neccessary - no CS support #

I do not need another cheap piece of made-in-China junk. What good is it to have a free ticket to more time consuming problems than I already have and another piece of plastic junk to add to the pile of sh** I already have. I am more than willing to PAY for any service I recieve. This is a no go.

I will e-mail CS and tell them of my probs but I will not hold my breath. If anything happens will let yall know.

When I first got MagicJack over a year ago it worked great. Then after a software upgrade the calls were limited to an hour. Found later I could make 2 hour calls from MJ phone to PSTN phone.

However over the last month I have been having problems with one way transmission where the PSTN person couldn't hear me and beeping on the line and breakups in the voice (all on PSTN side). Magic Jack support in these areas has been very poor.

Also noted a problem with Magic Jack and several disk burning utilities--i.e. Roxio, Nero,..etc. When MJ is plugged in these applications have problems either starting up or accessing the disks. Found if I unplug the Magic Jack the problem disappears. Go figure.

My husband and I purchased Magic Jack 6 months ago. We can't get through one full conversation with anyone, without either us hearing a beeping sound every 20 seconds or the person we are talking to telling us they keep hearing a beeping sound. I do love Magic Jack, but, please someone help us fiqure out what is causing the beeping sound. Many Thanks

In my comment dated 8/1 I stated I would update w/info if anything happened.

Today I was able to set up my voicemail finally.

Online tech chats sometimes take too long. I do not wish to be unable to get help when necessary esp. w/a product which has so many issues and problems and either is or acts like a beta.

I actually @ one point decided to keep it - but not rely on it. We each have cells.

It is unreliable - dropped calls, sometimes poor sound quality (ringing, breakup and crackles). Last night my husband went to use it - dead.

Anyone who decides to purchase this - make sure you have a real phone for backup. Esp w/911 being an issue. In my state anyone can have a landline to use for 911 however if you are depending on this and it does not work this could be a safety hazard, life threatening as well.

I fiddled around w/connections, phone etc. Finally today restarted MJ. It did work.

I am returning it. If they wish to use me as a guinea pig I expect to use it free of charge and report to MJ as part of their testing team.

My time is important to me. This is not the Soviet Union. MJ does business like a state service w/bureaucrats in charge. Customer service is inadequate.

Forty bucks a pop makes them rich and gives me a headache. I will look for the next big thing and a better mousetrap!

I may have a solution to the Beeping problem that alot are having trouble with. I had a terrible time with the "beep", but have figured out what may be causing many the same, mJ support sucks, seems a shame a PHD Engineer cant figure it out and a junkman can figure it out.

EDITOR'S NOTE: So... are you going to share your secret with the rest of the world?

Another viable alternative to Magic Jack that your readers may consider is Ooma (www.ooma.com). This is a free standing device in that you do not need to have your computer powered on all the time. This device plugs directly into your network and through the "magic" of VOIP, allows unlimited calls with NO MONTHLY OR ANNUAL FEES. I paid $250 for this device and simply love it.
I don't work for the company and don't know much about it only that I got rid of those crooks at ATT who have the guts to charge me $100 a month for landline (antiquated) phone service.

I have had HORRIBLE voice quality on both speaking ends of MJ. However, I found Process Lasso that seems to mostly eliminate the Garble!

I recommend that folks go to the site and GET this remarkable software.
[I am extremely pleased]

I purchased a magic jack one month ago. I am having the same problem as David posted 8/9/09. Beeps during calls, calls being cut off and moments of silence on the receiver's end while we are talking. I would love to find out the solution. Help!

EDITOR'S NOTE: Some people have reported that MJ tech support recommends running this update to fix the beeping problem:

http://upgrades.talk4free.com/upgrade/20090619000002/upgrade.exe

There's also an "Unofficial MJ forum" devoted to this problem: http://www.magicjacksupport.com/official-beeping-troubleshooting-thread-t6439.html

I bought this product recently and it amazes me with the audio clarity and no echo or delays in the signal. If it continues to work as well for its entire life, I shall be extremely satisfied. I set my unit up in the US with a local number and I'm now using it in Canada - just as clear a signal when calling in Canada, and absolutely NO glitches so far. This is the first internet communication device that I've used that actually works. It beats my cell phone, which often disconnects because of poor reception. Anyone who is having problems may have a poor internet connection, or may be an idiot.

I purchased the Magic Jack for my girlfriend and she loves it. Not a single issue with quality or dropped calls. Her PC runs 24x7. It runs Folding@Home as well and it's only a 2.8GHz P4 with 1GB ram.

I have had Skype for 2 years and it's great as well. I just purchased a Phillips VOIP phone that connects directly to the router (no pc involved) and it's better than sliced bread.

I'm considering switching to Magic Jack when my current subscription is up for renewal. While Skype is cheap at around $65/year, why not save the $45?

One advantage to MJ over Skype is that you can use your old analog fax machine over MJ, but not with Skype.

I've not used Vonage, but am amazed that they can charge as much as they do.

As a great amount of calling my family does is to Switzerland, the 2.1 cents/minute is unbeatable.

Can you keep your phone number with Magic Jack yet? Do they give you a new one?

update on magicjack: I had great difficulty w/cs trying to return this. You have no choice but to go through online chat cs to make the return and there is a process.

They lie to you and claim that in order to return it you MUST HAVE THE ENTIRE ORIGINAL PACKAGE AND MATERIALS-likely to discourage ppl from returning and to maintain their A- BBB score, however nowhere in the guarantee or w/the shipment do they claim this.

I lied and claimed I had it and returned it-they issued a refund so it's just a big fat lie to prevent ppl from returning it. I am reporting them to FTC and BBB.

Most successful reputable companies do not pull these antics unless ppl are returning their product in droves.

You must online chat or use preformatted e-mails I believe which likely serves to cover their sketchy practices.

To the message calling the thousands of ppl who found majicjack a ripoff (google it-testimonials far out weigh satisfied customers) idiots, or have poor connection: I do not think I am an idiot and I have broadband - on all the time -dell xps 400 w/dual core, media center xp, fast connection speed, up to date software & drivers, maintain my system like religion and automatically defrag and optimize.

I loved the Majic Jack when I first got the device. It worked great unless you were downloading something. I had mine plugged in for a few weeks and I received memory storage messages errors. I also got warnings about MJ needing to be connected to a USB. I have tried to get tech support but can't seem to get a response. I liked the product but don't like its track record.

I have magic jack and I have had problems ever since I got it. its constantly going out and you can not get someone to help you. they do it all by computer and will not talk to you by phone. Does anyone have the original phone number to these people. They are worthless and this is not a product that I recommend

Let's be honest--I re-signed for a 5 year renewal license because I LIVE on my computer, use my telephone very infrequently and loathe paying for a service that I seldom use. However, you DO get what you pay for and MagicJack has many, many annoying issues. Chief among these, is its tendency to take over (and generally MESS UP) your configurations after one of its frequent updates. And woe-woe-WOE-be-unto-you if you should need to "rely upon the kindness of (those) Customer 'Support' strangers" in MagicJack-neverland (!) It can get...very ugly, very quickly. Not only should you expect to spend a MINIMUM of 30 minutes phone time, even after your call has been escalated to a supervisor; but these supervisory techs are a bit on the arrogant side as they fail to fix your MJ issues. In the end, I find that I repair these glitches myself...just in time for the next Magicjack update (she adds dryly)
