I tried to get Magic Jack, bust since unfortunately I live in Itly, most ststeside agencies will not ship overseas. I wanted it because I make a lot of long distance calls back to the states. A friend call me from Las Vegas and I was amazed at the communication voice quality of our conversation. Even a direct call from the Italian Telecom or vice versa is not as good. This EU, European Union has blocked out from purchasing almost everything. I used to order items from the states from various computer stores, but now the EU has a racket going that never ends..and shipments, if and when they do arrive are charged 20% VAT Tax. Anyway, aside from that, that Magic Jack is really magic. Somehow I got to get it!

I just bought new laptop computer and use magic jack with it.I just discovered the laptop will shut itself off after a period of time, and naturally the magic jack won't work.I already cancelled my land line service.Any suggestions?

EDITOR'S NOTE: You'll need to adjust your Power Options in Control Panel, so that the laptop never hibernates. You might also want to avoid Standby mode, but you can experiment with that.

I have had the Magic Jack for a year. They cancelled the service without informing me that an update or renewal was due. I have had some many calls dropped, not a good thing, and others on the line telling me they could only understand every 4th word. When I called yesterday evening an "chatted" with Geraldine and Maya they said they could not answer my questions about clarity until I renewed. Duh, why would I want to renew if I have to wind up calling people on my land line because they can't hear me? The chat tech would not even give me the office address to send a letter, until I would not give up. What a crock when you have no customer support or any way to contact the main office when you have a problem. Good luck. AT&T may cost more but at least I get through. I even had one friend tell me that the Magic Jack number was a horrible choice.

I use magic jack and have found the solution to most disconnect problems. Mine would go offline frequently and MagicJack was of no help. I found that if you use a "POWERED" usb hub it works fine. Apparently even the usb on the some computers do not have enough power to keep the Magic Jack working, but as soon as I used a powered usb hub it has worked flawlessly. IT MUST BE A *POWERED* usb hub!

My message box was full. what can i do to resolve my problem. i am on WIFI here at this RV park I have 3 bars on the net. It is Gteckwifi and the Mbps always changes. please help me with this problem if you can.

EDITOR'S NOTE: A wifi connection will generally not provide good performance for any Internet voice service. I'd guess that's the problem.

I had Magic Jack (trial, fall 2009), but returned it.
(1) EVERY time I booted a MagicJack-connected computer, a download was done to download latest software, taking time/cpu-bandwidth.
(2) Though they provided Voicemail, I needed to have my computer running their software (same as SkyPE), in order to directly receive phone calls.
Unlike Vonage, which has a device that can "carry" the phone service even if your computer is down, as long as the modem/router is running.
A key advantage, which requires $25/month (vs. $2-3/month for MagicJack)(i.e., much higher).
(3) They did not provide a truly-local phone # (it was 30 miles away, a toll call).
(4) They did not yet allow transferring my existing (local) phone number to the Magic Jack service.

I purchased Magic Jack and plugged it in and it whipped out my audio I contacted customer service and was told to update to Vista service pack 2.
I did and it whipped out half my N Vidia program and the all the backups, I even had an external hard drive with backups that was made unaccessable so I had no way of getting it back so I went to HP and downloaded updated drivers that didn't work I uninstalled service pack 2 but that actually was when I became aware that the back up on my external no longer worked.
I had an original version of Vista on a partition and was baking up the desktop items and photos on dvd turned off the computer to start the partition. When I turned on the computer to reformat my computer from the partition it was completely dead I couldn't access anything.

I had magic jack for a few months and always had problems with it, finally it quit working altogether and their tech support tried for 2 weeks to get it to work and failed. I asked for a refund as i also had paid for 5 years in advance and was refused any refund at all.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Did you do a chargeback with your credit card company?

The time that I have wasted in trying to get Magic Jack to work on my computer was not worth the savings I might see on my telephone bill if I ever get the thing to work. Definitely does not work as easily as advertised and customer support cannot explain in English what I need to do to fix. It might work - some people have really good reviews. It might not - many more have complaints about the product or the service. It's like playing the lottery - maybe you'll get lucky.

I actually have 2 MJ's. One is a US #, the other is a Canadian #. The only reason I bought 2 was when I bought the 1st one I couldn't get a Canadian #. They have them now. But I was required to buy a 2nd one. I've had no problems whatsoever with either one of them. I personally think it is a great product.

MagicJack has been working for me for just about a year now (which reminds me that I should check the renewal date.) I had one problem when they did a software update without telling us...two days of spotty service and then everything was fine.

No one has ever told me the line was unclear and I have certainly never had a problem on my end. It worked fine in a Costa Rica hotel last year with a wired connection on a netbook.

Except for the continued inability to port my landline number (which has to be a government hangup in approval) I have no complaints.

Everybody, make sure you use a Powered Usb hub on the rear of your computer.

There is a HUGE drawback to Magicjack and that is the available phone numbers. A friend of mine started using Magicjack a couple weeks ago. He can make outbound calls but rarely receives inbound calls. This is because the phone number he was given is for a city 75 miles away and is not a local number. Myself and others are charged for a long distance call if we call him.

I have had Magic Jack for about a year now. It works very well for me. The only problem I have encountered is the local call issue that others have talked about. The number they assigned me is in a neighboring city, as a result some incoming calls ar not local and cost a nickel or a dime.
As a whole, I give it and A. Voice clarity is phenominal and I have ha no problem with dropped calls

I have used the mj for two years now and it is fantastic. never any problems we talk for hours on it. The key is to have a high bandwidth. The local number is not an issue here where I live because most people have the free long distance in there phone service package anyway. Besides we have to dial the area code or ten digit phone number where I live anyway. Even if you have local regular phone service so dialing a one in front of the ten digit number is no big deal for us. I have dropped my home phone service and went to dry loop Internet service "no phone service needed" and have saved hundreds of dollars. I would recommend it to anyone!!!! It was easy to set up can't really understand why so many people said that it is so to hard to set up? Plug it into a usb port "high speed usb port" works better. And follow the directions? Very simple I give it 5 ***** Thanks Gary Wv

Does this "mess up" your E-911 service? I would imagine so but did not see any mention of it.
