The AskBobRankin Geekly Update
Verizon's CEO Ivan Seidenberg said this week that the iPhone is not coming to Verizon until at least 2012, when they go 4G. Good -- that will be just enough time for Android-based phones to take over the world.
Napster has arrived for Apple iPad/iPhone/touch users. For $10 a month, you get unlimited access to more than 10 million tracks from iTunes. You can also save songs, and listen when not connected.
Also newly added to the App Store, because of Apple's decision to accept more applications that were similar to their own, Google Voice Mobile is now available. The download will only set you back $2.99.
Flickr announced that Sunday a user uploaded its 5 billionth photo. The shot was captioned, "I am Mr. 5 Billion, and there ain't nothing you can do to stop me" by its owner, Aaron Yeo. Yes, but with about 20 million cat/kitten/dog/puppy photos on Flickr, shouldn't they consider some form of photo neutering program?
If you happen to have both eccentricities of Tweeting frequently and growing your own, Pocket Grow combines both. Due out January 2011, the minute GrowBox combines an automated drip system, LEDs and instructions to teach your plants to Tweet. Sounds like an interesting joint venture...
Mikey is a new "professional quality" mic for your Flip camcorder, from Blue Microphones. Available next year, you pop a AAA battery into it, attach it to the base of the Flip and adjust to Loud or Automatic sensitivity. Expect a $69.00 price when it debuts early 2011.
A two-step verification process will now mean better security for Google users for apps on Android devices, iPhones or Blackberrys. After choosing a password, you specify if you want a randomly generated code sent through text or automated voice call. That code changes every few minutes.
Don't have a lot of room when you travel but want a full size keyboard for your laptop, smartphone or other mobile device? Cervantes Mobile's Jorno is compact enough to fit into your pocket or bag but becomes rigid when unfolded. The Bluetooth peripheral can be pre-ordered now for $79.00 and will be released early next year for $99.00.
It's gonna cost a little extra if you want to buy a rich person's stolen credit card. When Krebs On Security was checking out a site that sells stolen credit cards for a fee, he found that each was sold for about $1.50. But there's a $.60 surcharge when the search is narrowed to a wealthy area.
Netflix has finally become available in Canada. For CDN $7.99 a month, members can instantly stream both movies and TV episodes.
