I had similar problem. My Computer would shut down at different times and go to the XP Blue Screen of death. I drove me nuts. I put more fans in in the case. It didn't solve it. I had a DVD Burner go out and put a new one in. The computer stayed on for 3 days, then it did it again. So I started looking at all of my drivers. I downloaded the latest Video Driver, the latest Motherboard Driver, etc... Microsoft's Drivers were 7/1/2001. By doing this it hasn't done this for 3 weeks now. I suspect it was either the Motherboard Driver or the Video. I'm happy now! |

Sometimes a failing power supply will cause this rebooting problum as well. |

Thanks for introducing SpeedFan, I've just dowloaded and try it. Great tool, everyone reading this should get one. At first I got a shock for my Temp3 temperature is 128. After reading the help file, it runs out the Temp3 is redundant. The best part is I am able to test my hard disk health using the S.M.A.R.T. tab. I got this resutl for my harddisk: The overall fitness for this drive is 66%. The overall performance for this drive is 97%. Look like it's time to take precaution to avoid another disaster. Thanks again Bob for sharing this excellent tool! |

I had a mysterious random reboot issue when I bought my first brand new pc. Every 3-4 days it would reboot while I was using it. That was 12 years ago. When I bought another new pc, four years later, same house, it did the same thing. Turns out we have brown-outs and installing a battery backup solved the problem, besides also providing extra insulation from surges and storms. |

I had similar issues last year when my PC started rebooting over and over again. Very quickly, every time I turned on my PC. I found out that my CD drive had died. I took it out of the boot sequence and everything was fine. |

Another thing to look for are programs that automatically update themselves. My computer was refusing to shut down a few weeks ago...I checked the CPU temp (normal limits), I unchecked the Automatically Restart in the System failure section, nothing was working. I then turned off automatic updates from Quicktime and voila, no more problems. |

I am trying to diagnose a similar problem. When I entered the CMOS I noticed that in the PC HEALTH section I am getting a FAIL reading on the +3.3v power rail. Sometimes also the +12v rail. I have unplugged and replugged the power connector from the power supply to the main board and this has temporarily solved the problem twice. The last time, I increased the fan speed of the power supply (mine is adjustable but not all are) and have had no problems for about 5 days. I think my problem may be solved. |

Also you can use the event viewer in win xp to see what was the problem. |

Don't overlook the mother board I've seen a lot of failed motherboards with this problem it's not restricted to one manufacturer but restarts are the most common symtom, see here http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/pcperipherals/0,39051168,39287434,00.htm or google "bulging capacitors" for plenty of information. |

I also have a restarting problem. It happens randomly most of them time but anytime I am playing "The Sims" it seems to happen every 10 minutes. I have unchecked the automatic restart, and that has not solved the problem. My fan frequently runs loudly so Im thinking it may be a temperature problem. I will keep everyone updated, because if thats not the problem I would like to see if we can't all find solutions to our problems |

Help !!!!!, I just bought a new video card and it told me to uninstall any previous versions of old graphics drivers. I so uninstalled the graphics drivers and had to unplug my Floppy drive to have enough voltage for my graphic card. I uninstalled the Nvidia driver and the EVGA resolution changer, and now my computer restarts itself over and over again. It doesn't even make it to the Windows bar page ( the black screen with the XP logo and then a bar under it that moves 3 blue squares left to right) and before that it would go did not shut down properly. so I go start normally or safe mode but then it would just restart. So help!!! EDITOR'S NOTE: I would put the OLD video card back in... |

I am using Windows XP. Recently I found that everytime I wanted to download a file from any site, my computer restarts. Suspecting that the download accelerator might be a problem, I uninstalled it, but the problem still occurs. Suspecting the firewall, or the security setting, I put it the the low level, but still no success. I tried to uninstall realplayer, but the problem still persists. I am at a loss as to what to do. If necessary, I thought I will remove Windows XP and reinstall to see whether this can work or not. I tried to run msconfig, but after a second the computer reboots. I don't even have a chance to view the settings. EDITOR'S NOTE: I would remove all non-essential sotware packages and run thorough anti-virus and anti-spyware scans. See http://www.askbobrankin.com/should_i_buy_antispyware_or_antivirus_software.html |

I experienced the same problem. Three perfectly fine computers were disconnected from our network about six months ago. When I decided to try them last week, they just restart by themselves every few minutes. |

I had a problem with my pc restarting and shutting down by itself. I updated all my drivers, and still had the problem. I thought maybe it was my video card, memory, sound card, harddrive. after removing one piece at a time i found ot that wasnt the problem either. I changed the power supply, and bingo, no problem. $35.00 could maybe save u a lot of headaches. |
